Does Gimp have a "smudge tool" or a similar tool to blend?. Also i googled that Gimp can open photoshop files (psd), so maybe i could send you through a note, a drawing of mine so i can explain my process better.

Omg, i just realized i wrote some things with an inverted canvas...sorry about that.
Ok, i'll describe you my general process of digital art, so you can have an idea.
Step 1: Would be a sketch layer. (i know this doesn't need much explanation)
Step 2: i draw the lineart, a tip i could give you, is to draw the face of a character, or other sort of details that may overlap some of the overall lineart lines, in another layer, so that way, if you need to change or fix something, you won't have much trouble with it , also, i put some optionals i use on the lineart folder, those optionals would depend on what brush are you using, or the effect you want to give to the lineart.
Step 3: Step 3 on the file says lineart...damn i was sleepy...sorry, but forget that, step 3 is the mask layer, and i use a mask layer so it's easier to paint and shade the drawing, so, the way i do the pre-masking is a pick a really strong color like red, and fill all of the outer area of the drawing, then select what i painted, and invert the selection, then on another layer i fill the new inverted selection, and that makes a pretty good Mask to work on.
Step 4: Would be coloring, that's where the mask layer comes in handy, so refer to that selection, or even use that mask layer to create some layer masks on the coloring of the skin, hair, face, clothes, etc.
Step 5: Is shading, for shading i add a new layer on top of the coloring layers i just made, i usually use this shading layer in multiply layer mode, the way of shading will vary on your style and what brushes are you using, but the important thing here is, is that i use the coloring layer i made in step 4, and put the shading layer on top as a clip mask, or clipping it at the layer below, i dunno if Gimp can do that or not, but basically with that clipping mask, you can shade in the area of the layer that's below, if Gimp can't do that, then use the mask layer or the selection of the coloring layer (skin, face, hair, etc) as a selection or a mask, so you can shade in those boundaries.
Step 6: Is adding the lights, it's basically the same process i do in step 5, but instead of multiply layer mode, i use overlay, sof light, add lights, lighten, screen or layers mode like that.
Step 7: I add highlights, just to give some nice touch in certain places, like a highlight in the eyes, metal, and stuff that needs a highlight.
Step 8: Would be post processing, but this is just optional and i dunno what sort of post processing tools Gimp has.

I seem to do step two just on the principal that if I have to move something its easier and doesn't affect other line work. :d Good habit.
Hmm I've never used masking techniques. This seems really interesting.
Are you using masks to avoid ruin the underpainted layers? I know some people will just painterly shade over the top in a separate layer as well.
Overlay and soft light seem to be the go to and multiply. If I try anything else it either doesn't work at all or doesn't do what I thought it would. I also decide that I am unsure I like the dodge or burn tools. One on my favorite artists swear they are the Devil's tools. They seem to not work consistently to the way I would image them to. Like they work in opposites.
How are you blending though with your brushes? Like sweeping motions and such on skin. I can't decide if I'm needing to go one direction or another. Circular seems okay for some things. While back and forthing makes things flat in others. I try to follow form but painting seems to be a whole other ball game.
When you mean post processing do you mean exportation of the files and compression techniques? Or filters and such. Gimp has a lot of the same ps filters.

"Are you using masks to avoid ruin the underpainted layers?"
Yup.
"Overlay and soft light seem to be the go to and multiply. If I try anything else it either doesn't work at all or doesn't do what I thought it would."
Yeah, those are the most used layer modes among digital artists.
"I also decide that I am unsure I like the dodge or burn tools. "
Those tools could help you with minor details or post processing effects, but imo is best that you shade with multiply, and add light with overlay, soft light or screen.
"One on my favorite artists swear they are the Devil's tools. They seem to not work consistently to the way I would image them to. Like they work in opposites."
Yeah, the results you can have with dodge and burn tools it's not very reliable.
"How are you blending though with your brushes? Like sweeping motions and such on skin."
I don't blend that much, i mostly use a good brush that adapts to my pen pressure, and i shade with small sweeping strokes, also, there are brushes with really low opacity, sort of like a soft spray brush, that could also help you with the shading.
" I can't decide if I'm needing to go one direction or another. Circular seems okay for some things. While back and forthing makes things flat in others. I try to follow form but painting seems to be a whole other ball game. "
You'll find what works best for you in time, there's no need to stick to one way of using your brushes. Try to experiment, try new things and have fun with the process.
"When you mean post processing do you mean exportation of the files and compression techniques? Or filters and such. Gimp has a lot of the same ps filters."
Filters and such, here's a video with some really good post-processing techniques. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIZwUs…

I like how all the other signs are so happy for the rat, like they are (in fact) celebrating the rat's birthday, so the drawing have some good vibes to it, and i like that.
