Oh I think I know the feeling. Since the beginning of this year I've been trying to develop a style and teach myself as much as I can, haha.

Thanks. If you have the time too, I'd love to just know your art process and perhaps brush settings sometime. Not trying to copy or anything, but I figure it'd be something good to learn from and wrap my head around. I just need to try something new.

Whoops, sorry it took so long to reply.
But sure, all I usually do is make a rough sketch in SAI with the marker (standard circle), and fill the layer under it with a shade of the color I plan to make most prominent in the scene. I make a new layer under the sketch and throw down some base colors and shadows, and then throw several other layers over that and add highlights (overlay) and shadows (multiply/overlay) with loose strokes, still using the marker (simple circle/rough flat). Now's the point that I decide to send it to photoshop or not to play with the hue/saturation slidebar and gradients, depending on if I think I want more color variation, a different scheme, more or less saturation, whatever. Once satisfied with the palette I have now I send it back over to SAI, make a layer over the linework, and use the pen/brush tool (simple round for details, rough flat for larger areas) to take the colors and forms from the canvas and paint them over the sketch, add texture, necessary outlines, touch up areas that need it, and finalize the painting.

I really should make a decent tutorial thing to explain this process at some point for the people that ask me questions like this, but for now take a look at these two if you haven't seen them already:

Both of these helped a LOT in giving me a starting point to begin experimenting and developing my own style, and have been big influences in the way I paint. I also really need to start recording my sessions again, I'll try to remember to make a video of the next painting I make. I would link you to some speed paints I've already made, but they are really old and I've changed my process quite a bit since making them.

Thanks for this! I read every page of the second link last night. Also been snoopin' around the internets on people's digital art processes, so I think combined with yours I have a pretty good idea of where to start. Hopefully I'll be startin' on something soon, so keep an eye out for it in the future.

Well mostly I've been trying to get away from making things overly detailed in favor of a more fun painterly look. For me painting was really tedious and time consuming because I would get caught up in adding 1000 unnecessary tiny details in an attempt to make whatever it was look more realistic. Now I've gotten away from that, and I've started using a number of different quick strokes to simulate detail and texture instead. Color's another thing, I felt that I only really used dark, dull, safe colors before so I've been trying to work with vibrant, bright hues more and more. So far these changes have made the process a lot more enjoyable!
