Always welcome I love your pencils and inks. Mind if I use a few some of your pencils in my ink portfolio and some of your inks in my color portfolio?

1. You properly credit me

Well its not that i didn't think you would, but in my experience, you can't assume everyone is as educated as you wish they were haha.

Well anyways I can't wait to see what you come up with..... I've always wondered why my work looks like inked by someone else!

Oh dude I didn't mean anything by it. Sadly you are right, you can't assume that everyone is professional enough not to steal your work. Reality is what it is. I can't guarantee you'll see anything in a week or anything but it's always nice to get approval way in advance so that when I'm lookin for something new to do I know who's galleries to raid (figuratively raid lol)

haha wow, miscommunication everywhere haha. I know you didn't mean anything by it, i must really come off as a jerk online haha.

Anyways, I understand it'll be a while before you'll Ink my stuff, and this might be premature, but i've always wanted to see how someone would ink "prefered" way of penciling. Which is a pretty light loose pencils. I imagine it would be an inker's or colorist's nightmare, so i don't do it for my published work, but i've always wondered how an inker would tackle it.

Sorry just thinking out loud...er...in text? We can talk about that once you have some time to play around with inking.

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-10 00:34:20 +0000 UTC]

Nah no miscommunication. I know I've seen your work with Zenescope, don't they ink your stuff or do you do it before sending it over to them? I love Zenescope so I'll probably go with some of your GFT stuff.

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-05-10 22:03:56 +0000 UTC]

wow really? I thought my friend Julie was the only girl that liked Zenescope. Awesome! haha

All the work thats been published so far by Zenescope has just been color straight onto my pencils. The book that is coming out this month (issue #47) I inked myself. To me, tight pencils, or Inked takes the same amount of time, so might as well ink it right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-11 15:19:59 +0000 UTC]

I color and ink so yeah, tight pencils or inks are about equal when you can digitally darken the pencils. I understand only wanting to do one of the two! I've color from pencils and inks and aside from the inks being cleaner and sharper there isn't much difference for me.

I love Zenescope, especially Wonderland and GFT. Of course it helps that everyone I've met that works with or for Zenescope has been a really cool person lol.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-05-16 14:16:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I personally am very fond of a well inked page. There are times pencils look fine colored. But depending on the colorist's style the line work USUALLY looks dirty and the colors look muddy from the graphite showing through.

Some colorists know how to work with the grit of the pencil, but not many, and most comics i see that have "pencil straight to color" techniques never look as good as if someone took the time to ink the line art. Thats my personal opinion though..

I know what you mean about Zenescope being cool. They've always been kind trying to get a gig with them. and very kind while working with them....well..... if you call some of the insane deadlines i've had as kind... but i don't hold that against them, the book has to get done right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-16 15:03:32 +0000 UTC]

The problem I have with coloring penciled pages is that it can be hard to make the lines clean and the hand smudges of the penciler through off the adjustments that darken the pencils. If the pencils are clean then it's easy to darken them and color with just the pencils. It really depends on the picture with me but I've noticed that with the penciled pages I've taken the time to ink, the colors come out better and faster.

I honestly don't know much about working on tight deadlines. The only deadlines I have are the ones I've placed on myself and those are easy to fudge lol. Everytime I ask someone for a deadline they always say, whenever you can. Honestly it gets annoying after a while you know?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-05-17 22:14:23 +0000 UTC]

Well I don't know how fast you work. BUT i do know colorists are often asked to work very fast. Often doing 2-3 pages a day depending on the deadlines. and Zenescope's "Grimm Fairy Tales" books have been behind schedule the last few months, and i've operated on no sleep getting 2 pages done a night, i shudder to think what the poor colorist had to do.

If you ever want someone to give you deadlines I'd be happy to! I just need to know how fast you work so i can make it realistic. (not like it would mean much, i suppose my deadlines would be as easy to fudge as yours huh?.... i guess its the thought that counts)

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-18 01:39:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm getting quicker but I'm not up to Nei's speed yet. It really depends on the piece. Pin up versus interior page, etc. I can finish an interior in about 8 hours, pinups take a couple more hours because they are more intimidating lol. Like that Hi piece that you drew, I spent about 6 hours on it yesterday (tryin to speed paint) and then opened it today and made a revision in under an hour that I think greatly improved it. Of course this is only for colors, I can do inks much quicker, but again it depends on the piece.

If I need a deadline I'll let you know, I guess I was kinda askin for that one huh? lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-05-19 22:35:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh Nei is a Seasoned pro. Thats like me saying "I'm not up to Jim Lee's speed yet" Its an admirable goal, but insane to think you can be at that level so soon out of the gate.

But I'm about at the same speed for my colors. The only thing is I HATE COLOR. Now taken out of context that would make me seem quite racist, but the truth is despite the fact I'm pretty good at coloring, i find it so tedious and annoying. Plus over the years i've been growing more and more fond of black and white art between old 80's indie comics (like Ninja Turtles) I've been discovering, Manga, and the B/W Marvel essential books i've been reading.

Not that there's anything wrong with coloring, obviously, but feel like alot of my art is really done after the lines are done, so sometimes when i'm coloring i feel like i'm adding an needless step to my process.
But just because i'm lazy shouldn't stop OTHER people from coloring my art (hint hint) haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-20 18:01:45 +0000 UTC]

YOU HATE COLOR!!! CALL THE COLOR POLICE!!!! And why aren't you up to Jim Lee's level yet huh?? lol just kidding. I kinda know what you mean though. I started out as a writer, then jumped to colorist and inker. Even then I've only been coloring for a little over a year and inking for about 6 months. Pencils are the tedious part for me.

Color can get tedious after the flats are done and I'm trying to decide where to start the second half of the fun. One reason I like inking is because everything is quite literally black and white. It seems simplier even though it can be just as difficult. Lots of people subscribe to the Jack of all trades, master of none theory, but to me when I get an image stuck in my head it's usually something I can't find done like I want somewhere else so I have to end up trying to draw it myself. Or I'll find something penciled that I want to color so I need to ink it first, etc. etc. etc.

Besides that's what you have the rest of us for So you can focus on pencils and we (myself and whoever else wants to give it a go) can ink and color.

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-05-20 22:48:34 +0000 UTC]

God Bless you inkers and colorists. I personally believe artists should understand all the aspects and know how to Pencil, Ink and Color and then have a "specialty." because you're specialty will only be stronger if you understand what the other artists will have to do. Kinda like a Penciler who doesn't leave room for the word balloons. he doesn't understand the art of the other creators and ends up ruining the piece as a whole.

Maybe somewhere down the line we can collaborate on some art? I'll do the pencils. You can ink. Then you can flat and i'll finish the color. (i assume that would work since you find it tedious after flats, and i find flatting the most tedious part.).

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-21 00:06:51 +0000 UTC]

I agree. Plus you can't fix anatomy and lighting problems as an inker or colorist without knowing anatomy and lighting like a penciler. And it's easier to lay out a page as a penciler if you have a basic understand of writing. You know I had to spend 30 minutes once explaining to a penciler why the main action of a panel needed to go from left to right instead of right to left? He couldn't grasp the fact that going left to right moves the story forward and makes the reader want to turn the page forward while going from right to left leads the reader backwards. 30 minutes to explain that 1 simple trick.

The collaboration sounds like a plan though. Did you have any images in mind? I've got a few that I'd like to do that I've been trying to find a penciler for, but I'd like to hear yours first.

Honestly i don't have anything in mind. Next on my agenda is to do some pin up art to fill the rest of the Zero issue of my creator owned comic "Shadows of Oblivion" (the zero issue is only 11 pages long).

I don't know what you have in mind. It's probably cooler than you inking my silly characters.

What where you thinking of?

mmmmm Battered Batman......

haha sorry I couldn't resist. Anyways, I like Star Wars, but i don't really know it beyond the movies, and considering i don't want to try and nail the likenesses of actors, I'm going to vote for Batman.

so whatchya thinkin?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-23 18:28:45 +0000 UTC]

Lol actually the Batman piece I was thinking of was Battered Batman!! Ever heard of Darkwing Duck? His catch phrase is "I am the terror that flaps in the night". My fiance had an idea to do a Batman / Darkwing Duck picture and I thought it would be hilarious to have Batman beaten up on the ground with Darkwing Duck standing over him, a foot on his chest, heroic pose. Then across the top put the catch phrase. The Star Wars piece was also the fiance's idea. The Star Wars bad guys set up like the famouse dogs playing poker picture. Jabba, Darth, The Emporer, Greedo, and Bobba Fett with Bobba and Greedo up front where you can see their blasters drawn at each other under the table.

I've tried to lay out the Batman piece and I can get a good perspective with Batman's head in the right foreground and the camera angled extremely up from ground level, but I can't get the anatomy right. Is there anything you need done for Shadows of Oblivion?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-05-24 22:55:24 +0000 UTC]

Okay, so Darkwing Duck is like one of my absolute favorite cartoons ever! haha. I can't wait for the comic to come out by Boom Studios haha. So i DEFINITELY vote for that one... I mean the Star Wars one sounds awesome, but i can't pass up Darkwing!

As far as Shadows of Oblivion goes, the Zero issue is done. and i'm just trying to come up with some pin ups right now. I always use Pin ups as an excuse to play around. Right now I'm playing around in Manga Studio and the perspective ruler tool... I love it! haha. But if i pencil some work that you feel like inking and or coloring in grayscale i'd happily credit you in the book and send you a free copy for every piece you worked on. (i know that isn't much, but I don't think i couldn't afford a page rate for you)

But unfortunately all of this is going on the back burner. Zenescope emailed me today, and i guess i'll have a new project to start on tomorrow. So depending on how much work it is, and the deadlines i have to work with, it might be a month or so before we can collaborate.

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-25 13:29:59 +0000 UTC]

Wow I didn't know Boom was doing a Darkwing Duck comic. I like the character and I just thought the piece would be hilarious because he seems like the comical cartoon version of Batman some times.

If I see anything in your gallery that I just have to paint and can do it quickly I'll send it your way. As for pay, I'm still at the phase where I'm ecstatic just to get a credit so a copy of the book is just icing on the cake lol.

I guess you can't give any details about what new Zenescope book your working on, although if you'd like to talk about it I'll gladly act as a sounding board (hint hint) I'm actually trying to amp up my portfolio fight now to send to Zenescope. Raven posted on facebook a few weeks back that they were looking for colorists and to just email them a link to your portfolio, but that's not the way their submission guidelines say to do it. I emailed them the link and I figure if I hear something, great, if not then having a little time to amp up my portfolio and submit it to the company or at a con isn't a bad thing.

As for the Darkwing Batman piece, when I was doing it myself I was ony planing on suing it for a portfolio piece and a con print so no worries on putting it off. It's just for fun anyway right? Something fun to break up the more serious work on other projects

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-05-25 23:14:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I think Darkwing actually comes out tomorrow (wednesday). I'm going to attempt to sneak out of work and head to the comic shop to pick it up haha.

How good are you at painting in gray scale? I might have you save me some time and I'll just send you my pencils and you can ink and paint it in gray scale. (since my comic is black and white, i'm going to save a buck in printing and print it all in black and white.) But first i have to wait and see what Zenescope demands of me, so Don't expect anything for a week or more haha.

And thats great your working on your portfolio. Keep at it! And if Raven said send him a link then do it! the Submission Guidliness basically to control the flood of submissions i'm sure they get. But I've always met an editor or art director at cons and got their contact info and then just directly emailed them my samples. I don't recommend just blindly emailing them samples unless they have already told you that its okay. (either at a convention or in Raven's Facebook post) but good luck! If we're lucky maybe we'll be working on a comic together soon!

And I'll get to darwking as soon as i can. Again it might be weeks to a month, but i'll do it i swear! If you want to email me that sketch you have so far so i can see the composition you're thinking of that would be awesome!

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-26 18:37:08 +0000 UTC]

Sadly I've never tried greyscale painting. I have no idea how good I woudl be at it, but I know I would need some practice at it. I'm too focused on color and color combination. Actualy now that I think about it I need to find some black and white tutorials to practice with. It would strengthen my lighting skills.

I completely understand about waiting on the collaboration. Zenescope comes first, I'd do the same thing lol. I've met Raven several times. He might even remember my name if he saw me and I reminded him lol. I met him the last 2 years Wizard World had their con in Arlington and I've been keeping in touch via facebook ever since because both those times he met me as a writer and not an artist, though he has seen my art on facebook. I'm steadily chippin away at him

Dude if I got a chance to work with you, Mike, Nei, or Raven on a Zenescope book I would freak the eff out! lol Someday I'm fairly certain that Raven and the gang (minus Nei) will be coming to the first Austin ComicCon this November and I hookem then in my hometown! You gonna be in Austin in November? I'm guessing that's gonna be the only Texas con big enough to make you travel from GA

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-05-26 22:11:10 +0000 UTC]

Keep at zenescop! It'll take some time but don't give up hope. I first handed them my portfolio in 2005 in Boston. I think issue 3 of Grimm Fairy Tales just came out. They said they liked my work, but i didn't hear back from them. I handed my portfolio again that year in NY, Philidelphia, Chicago, and San Diego. Nothing. Repeat the process until this past November when i got an email out of the blue offering me some work.

Now to be fair Zenescope was very tiny when i first started giving them my portfolio. So they didn't have a need for alot of artists when they were only publishing one book a month. AND IN 2005 my artwork was terrible. So it's no wonder it took so long before i started getting work. BUT it still will take some time, but I guarantee that as long as you don't quit, you will succeed.

I'd like to got to Austin. I have a friend there i'd like to visit. But I'm going to NY the month before in October. I don't think i can afford the plane tickets that close together, AND in novermber i'm flying home to Connecticut for thanksgiving. so all that travel will hurt the bank account a bit to much.

But if you find yourself in Atlanta for the Dragon Con, or the Atlanta Comic Con let me know! we'll meet up!

ChrisNewmann In reply to Shono [2010-05-29 13:19:23 +0000 UTC]

Damn that makes me feel better. I started actively trying to get work in 2007 with a local company called Capstone and I was a writer. I only went to my first con as an artist in March. I've got some amazing local friends in CCP who have helped me put together my portfolio, given me advice and critiques, and who I've gone to cons with.

I know getting into the industry isn't a quick thing. I keep telling myself that it could be up to 5 years before I get some real speed going. That and my cons are limited because of money. So far I haven't been able to afford any cons but the Dallas con and local Texas cons. That means no Atlanta con for a while either. Hopefully next year things will pick up enough for me to afford at least 1 out of state con!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-05-31 23:37:33 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately you're right. MOST professional artists take about 3-5 years (usually closer to 5 years) before they're taken seriously and start to get steady work. Its been 5 years for me, and I don't have steady work yet, BUT I am finally being taken seriously.

The secret to out of state cons is knowing someone that lives in the area so you can crash at their place. NYCC i have a friend that lives in Queens. I have a friend that goes to school in Philidelphia. A friend that lives in San Diego, and my family live in Connecticut (which makes New England Con's easy).

So I know money's still tight. But i live about 45 min out from Atlanta, and I'd have to check with my roomate to makes sure its cool with him (and his wife) but i don't see why you couldn't crash here and save you some money. (I understand that this proposition is probably creepy considering you don't even really know me, but I assure you my intentions are just to help out a fellow creator)

But just keep plugging away. Make contacts at your local cons and keep on sending work. Here is a secret you don't here too many people talk about. Snail mail is the best way to make first contact with editors. Every comic book has the address of the publisher. And every comic book says the name of the editor. So if you're reading a comic book you like, and you feel you're a good match for it. Write a letter and send it to the mail. They get so much email, and so little paper mail now a days they'll be more inclined to open your letter and read it. DO NOT ATTACH ARTWORK YOUR FIRST TIME! Just write the letter to introduce yourself, tell them how you like the work they do on the particular comic, tell them you are interested in working for them and ask if its okay to send them some samples. Then give them an address they can write back to, as well as your email address.

MOST likely they will write you back telling you its cool to send them some samples and they will tell you how to do it (email or mail or link to an online portfolio, whatever). and BAM instant contact to the comic book company you want to work for.

okay I've rambled enough here. Good luck with your adventures! ANd let me know if i can help at all! and i look forward to more of your inked and colored work!

Wow, that's a really cool offer thanks

Unfortunately the problem with out of state cons is usually the cost of plane tickets, or having enough vacation time saved up to drive..then of course the cost to drive. I've been hoping for several years to start making some out of state cons, however my fiance is one of the statistics that got let go from his job 2 years ago and has been underemployed ever since. Even the in state cons are tight to make. I'm hoping things will pick up this year since he just finished his bachelor's degree last month. If I'm lucky I might be able to take you up on that offer next year!

I'd never considered the snail mail way to get to an editor's desk. That's definately something I'm going to start working on!

Oh I wanted to tell you, thanks for the advice on beams of light. I think I finally figured them out, but I'd never considered using the lasso tool to lay them down. It works great!

Here's a question, have you ever run into a problem where a piece looks really awesome in photoshop but as soon as you save it to a jpeg, gif, or bmp it loses some of the color intensity and looks dull? That's now happened on the last 2 pieces I've done.

Also, is there a shortcut to making black lines white or do you just have to paint over them? I tried using a color burn layer mode, but it doesn't quite work.

Shono In reply to ChrisNewmann [2010-06-01 23:14:08 +0000 UTC]

Well I hope things pick up with you and your fiance. Times are rough. I know i dodged lay offs twice in the last two years. If i didn't I'd be living with my parents right now. So you do what you gotta do. Besides, its almost a sweeter victory when you have to trudge through this sort of adversity in the beginning. I don't know where I am going to be a Year from now. But if i'm not in Georgia you can crash at my place whenever the local con comes rolling into town. At the very least we can split a hotel at a mutually out of state con. I listen to alot of comic pod casts, and my favorite stories are the ones where these currently famous comic creators all piled into a cheep hotel long before anyone knew their names, just so they can go to a con and talk to some editors. That could be us! haha

Anyways. Definitely try the snail mail. Its a good alternative to going to the convention. I've personally never done it. But alot of editors have told me its a great way to it, and it makes perfect sense.

I'm very happy i could help with the light beams! now lets see if i can help even more! haha
jpeg, gif, and bmp files all have some sort of image compression going on. gif and bmp both are limited in the number of colors they have. bmp i think is 64 and gif is something like 250. So you're colors can't be as vibrant because you have less colors to choose from. jpeg removes pixels for compression often causing the image to become blurred and depending on which pixles the jpg removes, you could loose some of the color.

for the purpose of printing, never use anything other than a PSD file, or a TIFF file. (or a vector file like .AI or hi res PDF). jpeg is fine if you're just going to post it on the internet. But when we're talking colors, never use bmp, or gif.

and yes there is a short cut for coloring lines. But first you have to remove ALLLL the white except for the line. (if its a cleanly inked line you can just magic wand the white and hit delete. Its going to be alot trickier if you have soft pencil lines)

once all the white is removed make sure you are still on that layer, and in the layer window you will see a small section that says "lock" and has four icons next to it. click on the icon that has the gray checkerboard on it. What this does is lock the empty space so that you cannot do anything to it. SO now that you cant do anything to the empty space all you can do is modify filled space aka the lines. So choose your color, and your paint brush and go to town. and you can't screw up haha.

Let me know if that works. If you have trouble i can try to walk you through in real time through Instant Messanger. my AIM screen name is on my main page. Feel free to shoot me a line. I'm sort of a loser and i'm always online. (sometimes even when i'm asleep....i don't know how to turn it off my phone yet haha)

I hope this helps!

Well you know if you want to make any of the central texas cons your welcome to stay at our place. We live in a small town a little outside Austin. Even when we are at a con where we have to stay the night, I have a local group I go with and we always get a good deal on hotel rooms that we split and your welcome to join us. It usually ends up being about $30 a bed a night and a lot of fun when we all get together in one room and drink.

As for being a loser on the computer all the time, dude, I spend all day on a computer at work (and on yahoo IM) then I come home and spend the evening on the computer, so yeah we aren't going to start on THOSE conversations lol. Although if your online during the day your welcome to IM me. Okay, I'm off to try the locking color replacing trick and see if I can get these files down to a level where they can appear correctly online. Wish me luck. lol I'll let you know what happens It's weird cause this is the first time I've had this problem. Dude I sooooo want to ask about the new zenescope project lol but I know you can't say anything gaahh!!!! Are you still going to continue Shadows if Zenescope starts keeping you busy?

Well i answered most of these questions when we talked last night. but As far as Shadows of Oblivion goes. That is my Ultimate dream. I want there to be a shadows PVC statues, and a terrible terrible video game based off of it. and i Want a terrible movie to be made, and then remade 5 years later so that everyone forgets about the first one. So if Zenescope keeps me busy, Shadow's production would slow down, but never ever stop. But first i need to find a way to ditch this day job, cause i can't do 3 jobs in 24 hours and still sleep (the three jobs being the day job, Zenescope, and Shadows).

Lol well look at it this way when Zenescope makes you famous it'll be a lot easier to get the statues, games, and bad movies Based on the costumes for the Shadows characters I don't think your going to have a problem with the statues or the game. That's the kind of style that looks awesome on Tv and on the PVC statues. I don't blame you for doing the Zenescope stuff first either. It pays the bills and gives you great practice for you Shadows books I mean your pencils are great now, imagine what they are going to look like after drawing all that zenescope stuff!
