Lots of trials and error. Studying artists that I admire. Copying their work and then when I figured out what it was I admired about their work, tried to do the exact opposite of what they were doing. Another good thing that helped was using my imagination more than using reference pictures to draw from.

Yeah. When I was about 9 years old I was always drawing the TMNT, X-Men and the Power Rangers and stuff. Draw what you like. Don't draw exactly like what you see though. Look at the basic shapes and start from there.
The thing is, "fan art" is a standard you can put yourself to. Something you can gauge your art with. You will know if you are hitting the marks you want in how you want your art to look.
