Thank you Njalla! I've been painting/drawing most of my life, but really started to pursue a career in art about eight years ago.
The best tip I can give to anyone is drawing is the key fundamental to art. I suggest the "Charles Bargue Drawing Course" as a book to purchase to work on academic drawing skills. It's kinda spendy (about $80 on Amazon) but save up if you need to and invest in it. This was an actual course taught in the French academies (ateliers) in the 19th century.
I don't know your age, but I would also set my sights on attending a modern atelier to complete my training (Look up "atelier" on Google). These are by far the best academic training that has been available in the last 100 years. If you are willing to devote three to four years of your life to learning, you can emerge from these schools with the ability to tackle any genre of art you set your sites on.
