Probably the game inactivity, community in-game and the in-game economics. Be ready for essay from a meta player!
The game hasn't gotten any major update that involves any new weapons or new game mode or even something else other than hats. The competitive has been requested for a lot of community including my self, but after 9 years they finally released a half-assed competitive mode in beta without any improvement to fix the hackers. I quit like 2 years or 3 years ago, comeback like a year ago because of commission, and then quit after 1 month. Valve is quite busy and I get that, they got VR to take care of, Dota 2, CS:GO and other secret projects.
TF2 is pretty good community outside the game. They are creative, making SFM, arts, music and even mods. But the in-game are toxic because the game is free 2 play. I remember my last moment in the game. A player was bashing a F2Pers because they wore a Gibus hat and he said to them a "Goddamn F2P noobs".. Which in case the premium player is a spy out of 3 spies with focusing on killing other than objective. He did a terrible job if I say so my self. What's funny is that the Gibus hat wearer was much better than that Premium player.
The economics are fucked up. The key cost 13+ Refs last time I checked. Back then it was 2.33 and I am okay with it. I have been doing some micro-economy inside TF2. Making profits just by playing but now, not anymore. The community has taken away part of the fun that I thought was fun.
Finally, OVERWATCH. I found Overwatch is way better than TF2. The heroes are fun and unique. Learning how to play them extend my gameplay to 50+ Hours in, and I'm still learning other heroes. With Blizzard support, Overwatch is my new game.

Even with Overwatch. Although I hate when people compare Overwatch and TF2. These games are only similiar in game modes. Nothing else.

Overwatch is like the son of MOBA and TF2. I don't like MOBA much but I found them enjoyable. They are different in such gameplay, but it is my TF2 exchange.
