I was think the finger pieces are so long and slender and pointy on the old claw (like fingernails really) that I should use wood and round the tips a bit so that the claw doesn't get banned for being a weapon or something >_>;....So in that case I'd just have to look up some youtube tutorials and nag a friend into letting me barrow they sander I guess. I could use those little wooden craft rods you can get at a store.
I don't know what to use for the rest of it. I want it to be sturdy and water resistant.
And what kind of paint should I use for it? Don't spray paints have lead in them? {I want it to look more brass than gold, too}

I don't think spray paints rated for use indoors do, and so long as you use a decent primer, your finished piece will look like whatever the can says it will look like. I personally used steel for the entire construction, and I rarely run into problems at cons with it. They tend not to think of armor props as weapons, and if you don't swing it around like one they have no reason to.
And as for water resistance, whatever you paint over should be fairly protected.
