mine's definitely The Shadow Over Innsmouth When the main character spends the night in hotel it scares me more than tones of gore.

It was the first I read, but I don't think it really scared me. The only Lovecraft story that really creeped me out was "The Thing on the Doorstep" - the others rather fascinated me. Well, ok, he wrote some especially bad ones like The Dreamquest for Unknown Kadath or The Alchemist, too.

There are relly good versions of this special hotel scene in the - pretty medicore - movie Dagon as well as in the game Dark Corners of The Earth.
