My first thing that I work on to make a strong image is a solid pose.  Just use Body items and stick to black and white.  Anatomy is important to me when putting the items together.  Use reference model pics for real style poses.

That is the great thing with HeroMachine.  You can always save your pic then readjust you pose.  If you are not happy then just go back to your save and start again.
Look at drawing body references.  There are many if you google them.  Hope this helps.
