It depends. Sometimes you can get an all-in-one sort of thing, like printer than can scan images as well. It looks like a photocopy machine. Where you place the paper on the photocopy machine is where it scans the image, the only difference is that a scanner uploads it onto the computer whereas the photocopy machine makes a copy of it on paper.
