Yes. I died.

Actually, I'm fine. I've just been working on other things. I'm trying to figure out the YouTube thing, so I've been experimenting with that. I bought a new laptop to help make video editing easier, but unfortunately, it also seems to play games better, so I've actually been draining most of my time into games. But whatever time I'm not spending goofing off on games, I'm spending banging my head against the wall trying to figure out what kind of videos I should be making. So I'm not even thinking about comics at the moment. You'll probably not see any activity from me on this site in a while.

What goes through your head when you're keeping a particular plot detail a secret from your readers, but the very first person to guess at what it is gets it exactly right?

I ask because another person recently put me in the exact same situation, and my train of thought was along the lines of "What... I... was it that obvious?!Β  Why do I even bother keeping anything a secret if it's that easy to guess?"Β  I didn't let on, of course.

My first thought is like "Yay! Good for them." Seriously, I'm happy and filled with awe and wonder. I mean, just the fact that someone cares enough about my story to put any thought into what plot points might occur is just wonderful to me. I'm just glad that I could give them something to ponder about. I write stories for the fun of it. I don't think of it as a competition. I'm not trying to outsmart my readers or pull the wool over their eyes. I just want to tell the best and most entertaining story possible. Sometimes that can mean giving them a surprise that they never saw coming, other times it's giving them a puzzle with a solution that they are meant to solve. That being said, if I do set up a surprise that isn't meant to be guessed, and then someone guesses it, I take it as a challenge to up my game, but I'm still happy that someone took the time to try to outsmart me.

Tmaneea In reply to sonicinterface [2018-01-05 22:48:11 +0000 UTC]

I have a feeling that I might be the odd one between the two of us. I think most writers do obsess over trying to fool their audiences with twists that they can never see coming. I think it makes them feel smart, or something. But I don't think that that's the point of telling stories. Stories used to be a lot more straight forward and the audiences knew exactly what was going on, even if the characters didn't, and people liked those stories just fine. I think twists and surprises are good, but it's not the only thing that makes a good story. So I put most of my focus on good characters, good story, and good writing, and try to throw in a few surprises, twists, and mysteries, and if it shocks the reader then great, and if the reader sees it coming, then that's great too, just as long as they're entertained.

I think I once read a quote from the introduction of a collection of short stories that said something to the effect of, "If you already know exactly where a story will take you, there's no point in reading it."

I guess you then have a point in reading story even when you know how it is ending.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Tmaneea In reply to sonicinterface [2018-01-06 01:15:07 +0000 UTC]

I disagree with that completely. That's like saying, "If you already know what a food is going to taste like, there's no point in eating it." Don't believe everything you read in a book.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tmaneea In reply to sonicinterface [2018-01-06 02:44:55 +0000 UTC]

The point is, if something's good, if it moves you or makes you feel good, it doesn't matter if it's a surprise. My favorite movies are ones I can watch again and again and still make me laugh and cry, even though I know exactly what's going to happen and how it will end. Think of it this way. A good story is supposed to play on your emotions, but surprise is only one of a wide array of emotions. If all your worried about is making your audience surprised, then you're missing out on a wide spectrum of emotions you could be playing with.

I personally don't think surprise is that big of a deal anyway. I've seen movies with twists that completely ruin the movie. Have you ever seen 'Now You See Me'? Without spoiling it, the ending was very unpredictable, in fact it practically contradicted it's own premise and made no sense. The rest of the movie was good, but the twist made it all completely pointless and nonsensical. If they had just left the twist out, I would've actually enjoyed the movie. The point is, don't get too carried away trying to be surprising. It's not always a good thing.

Frankly, making comics has become a bit of a low priority lately. A few years ago, I would be pulling all nighters, losing sleep and isolating myself from my family just to make a deadline and maybe get a few comments and views in return. Now, with so little time and too much to do, I've elected to just chill and let the deadline pass, and put other priorities first. So you won't be seeing an entry from me this month, but not because I failed, but because I simply lacked the interest.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tmaneea In reply to sonicinterface [2017-04-28 14:33:46 +0000 UTC]

Considering that this is real life and not some kind of story, I wouldn't really be too worried about that. This world is much bigger and more complicated than anybody could possibly know. Just as a rule of thumb, if you think you have everything figured out, you probably don't.

Anyway, isn't that just the nature of theories? You come up with a theory, you dig into it, and it's either right or wrong. I don't think you can ever be 100% certain that a theory is correct, or else it wouldn't really be a theory, it would just be a fact. So you just have to come to terms with the fact that you're going to be wrong some times, or even most of the time.

It isn't wrong, though, to be wary of potential art thieves. They do exist, and I'm glad you tried to do the right thing and bring it to my attention. I don't think there's such a thing as being too careful in situations like this.
