Oo you're right It's actually because before he was hybridized he was just a run-of-the-mill member of Science Team, and was quite a vicious doucebag. He can't remember any of it though, even though it's possible for that side to resurface, and it's quite traumatic

Why not torture everything?

I myself have a tortured character but he's not related to Metroid (or anything else, really). He was basically driven to no-questions-asked rationalism during a war and thus would relentlessly kill any guy his contractor or commander commands him to, and he'd kill anyone who stood between him and his target. But he's easy to break and actually turns himself in for execution (wanted war criminal) when his latest master relieves him of duty, believing he himself is his final target.
