3B. I think everyone's in 3B. I know that both Katt and Tadd are also in the class. The only two that weren't in our class last year are Adam and Ian, I think.

Your welcome! Hey I really like your style. Are you enrolled in Joe Kubert's school? I'm going there next year! Im trying to meet some people and talk to them before hand to kinda know what I'm in for.

Hi, thanks!
Yeah, I go to the Joe Kubert School, this is going to be third year for me. Congratulations on getting in. Personally, I've really enjoyed it there. There is a ton of work to do, so definitely be prepared for that, but it really pushes you to work harder, and forces you to improve. Some people think it's too much, but as long as you stay on top of everything, you should be fine.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll try to answer them the best I can.

Hmm, I'll probably have a lot to ask over the course of this summer. But right away,
-Anyone I really need to look out for? (teachers or students)
or maybe,
. What has been really the most difficult course you have taken so far?
. How often (on average) are you doing art in one day?
. What do you usually do for lunch? (any good quick recipe secrets?)
. I know you're not a girl, but have you even seen the carriage house?
. And finally, Is it totally unheard of for me to bike to school everyday? because I really don't want to take me car or pay for a cab everyday.
Hah, you really don't need to answer all of these. I'm not trying to quiz you. It's just that I live all the way out it wisconsin, so Im pretty desperate to talk to someone about the school. I really excited to go! And I love to do art, so I hope Im ready for the work.

I never really had any problems with any of the teachers, they're usually fairly laid back. Personalities differ, so there may be a couple you don't really get along with as well, but none of them are complete jerks or anything. Students are usually pretty "normal", but there's probably going to be one or two insane/creepy/weird people, which can be amusing, annoying, or both. I know of one in particular for next year... but there are eyes everywhere.
Hmm, in first year, I guess narrative was the hardest, just because it was the most work. There are some classes that might seem harder just because you don't like them, lettering and pasteups being popular choices. But I think they've changed both of those classes, so I don't know.
Heh, average time spent on art... Depends on how fast you are, but it's going to be a large part of your day. You'll probably be doing between 5-8 hours outside of school a day, plus weekends.
They have a room for lunch, and there's a couple places within walking distance. I usually pack a lunch, and occasionally eat at the deli or Chinese place. My cooking knowledge doesn't go much further than the microwave or toaster... oh yeah, and I can boil water.
I've never seen the inside of the Carriage House, but I did live in the Clinton House first year. They're pretty old, but I didn't find it to be that bad. Carriage House is right next to the Mansion, also. And they're both about a mile from the school, so I'm sure you could walk/bike if you wanted to. Only problem being that you have to carry your portfolio and art supplies somehow. If you have a way to carry them with you, I don't see why it'd be a problem.
Don't worry about it, I don't mind answering them. I'm sure you'll like it here. I know I actually enjoy the work, although it can be trying at times, and there's plenty of other like-minded people to relate to. If you have any more questions, I don't mind.

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to do that for me! The school sounds so perfect.
Sounds like you know just as much about cooking as I do! I'm a master in the art of Ramen Noodle.
I can attach a big ol' basket to the front of my bike for storage It will look odd, but it will be helpful. or maybe I'll sell my car and get a scooter. So if you see some girl flying down the street with papers and art supplies going everywhere... it'll probably be me. :-D
. Did you do any other studying after high school but before JK's?
.I haven't worked with inking or story boarding much before this year, are there any major skills that I should be practicing before school starts, or are all the basics pretty much taught to you right away?
. With all that art and schooling do you have a lot of time for a part time job or social time with friends?
. Are you from Nj or NY?
Thank you again for taking some time off to answer my questions! But really feel free to take a while to write back, I'm not in any hurry, I'v got all summer!
I'm sure these questions are endless... but I don't want to bother you too much.

Like I said, it's no problem.
I went to college as an art major for about four years before coming here, but there's a lot of people that come straight out of high school, too.
I wouldn't worry about what you have or haven't done too much. I rarely did sequentials, and I never worked with anything besides tech pens for inking before coming here. They'll show you all that stuff, but of course, it never hurts to practice.
I'll be honest, you're not going to have a ton of free time. I'm sure you can still find some time to hang out with friends and all that, but a majority of the time will be spent drawing. Some people hold jobs during the year, so it can be done, but it's difficult. Several of us used to draw at the kitchen table at the Clinton House. That way we were working, but could have a little bit of fun, too.
I'm not from the area, no. I come from Georgia.
Again, don't worry about it. It doesn't take long to answer, and I really don't mind.

Georgia? That's cool, I looked at SCAD as a school possibility also after high school. The living was cheap... school, not so much.
. What made you decide to switch over to Jk?
Ha, don't worry about the free time thing. I don't have much of a social status here in Wisconsin, I doubt it will be any different in a school full of people working hard all the time. I Hope to use my art to earn some money over the course of the school year, to add up to the savings I have made over the course of the summer.
. Do you own a car? How do you get from school, to where you are living now?
. Is there a bus system?
. How do you earn your money during the school year?
My mom is pretty protective about me going to this school on the east coast. Today she actually bought me a can of pepper spray! hah (make sure to warn everybody)
. Are there many other girls at the school?
. What's the community like there? Do you think I'll have any problems?
. Is there a lot of resentment towards freshman?
You are such an awesome person to be helping me! I hope I'll get to meet you next year face to face!

JKS was only 3 years, seemed to be the more intense of the two schools, and... uh, yeah, the money was definitely an issue. Not to mention they actually get you portfolio reviews with some of the companies you may want to work with, which is nice.
Yeah, the free time isn't too bad, to me at least. I still have time to do other things, you just spend a lot drawing. A lot more than I was used to before.
Yeah, I have a car. Me and a couple others that I room with aren't that far from the school, but far enough that we need to drive. I decided to stay in NJ over the summer, so I'm still here now. We're in Randolph, which is a few miles from Dover and the school.
I'm sure there's a bus system somewhere, but honestly, I don't think I've ever seen a stop anywhere in Dover. I don't know where it runs through.
The female to male ratio is pretty heavy in favor of males, but there's several girls that go to school as well. I think there were 6 girls in my first year, and in first year last year. That's compared to around 30 guys.
Community at the school, or the neighborhood? Either way, I don't see there being any real problems. I didn't exactly get out much while I lived in Dover, so I don't really know all that much specifically. Didn't really strike me as a dangerous area or anything.
Nah, people don't seem to have any issues with others in different levels.
It's nothing, and I'm sure we will. The school is pretty small, so you're bound to run into me sooner or later.

Thats nice about the community. I didn't doubt for a second that it would be safe, but my mom insisted on pepper spray. I guess I'm not that worried about the girl/guy ratio. I'm pretty manly... Actually not really. I think a lot of people will make fun of my height. I try to fit in with the guys...
. Were you a big comic book/graphic novel reader before attending JKS? I just started reading graphic novels this summer (novels like Fables, Y the LAst Man, V for Vendetta) I hope I didn't miss any comic learning experiences after all these years of not reading them...
. Is it hard to find a cheap place to live in NJ close to the school?
. Does anyone actually depend on the train to get to school everyday. Because I understand there is a railroad a few blocks from the school.
. What do you do during the school year to earn money?
. What do you find you spend the most money on during the school year. (other than tuition)
. How often do you find yourself traveling to New York during the school year?
. Do you spend a lot of money on taxis?

bonvillain In reply to Carliihde [2008-07-20 02:42:01 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I've always been pretty big into comics, but lots of people either didn't read them much before, or still don't. Most people have at least a passing interest in comics, but some are more into other things.
Finding a reasonably priced apartment... is tough. Our apartment is $1200 a month, but I have two roommates so we split everything three ways. It makes it more affordable, but it's still pretty expensive considering the size of it. That price is pretty much what you should expect for a 2 bedroom in the immediate area.
I think some people use the train, mostly those that live in NY or NJ, but not quite close enough to drive. The train station is maybe a mile walk from the school.
During the school year I do flats for Avalon/Haberlin studios, which is basically prep work for comic colorists. It's not much, but it's a bit of extra money I can earn in my "spare time." Right now, I'm also working at Target, but I don't know if I'm going to keep that up during school.
Personally, I probably spend the most on comics. As far as stuff I need... food, gas, rent... You shouldn't need to buy new art supplies that often, but it can be a bit pricey when you do.
We've taken a few trips with the school into New York, and I went into the city a few times on my own (well, with other people, but not on a field trip or anything). We get a few breaks here and there during school, so you could probably find time to go into the city then.
I've never rode in a taxi, and I don't really know how much they are.

Well, I hope I can find a small job to keep up for extra spending money.
My biggest concerns for the school year is what I'm going to eat and money. My Parents' biggest concerns are for my safety. They don't want me going so far away for school. They are making me take this campus safety course before school starts, they expect me to learn some self defense. If you meet me next year you will see why... (Im tiny)
I have a fear of the big city, so I don't think I will be traveling there that much either, unless someone was there to accompany that could teach me the ropes.
Hopefully I will meet a few girls next year that will be willing to room with me during my second and third year. I'm not sure what the law is in NJ about girls and boys living together.
Yea, I liked taking the train when I went to visit the school. and I took a taxi from the station not knowing how extremely close it was from the school... hah, that was a waist of money.
- How far are the banks away from the school/residences?
- How far are grocery stores, the mall or the bulk of most of the stores?
- where do you usually shop?
-How much money would you say you spend on average per week?
- Is there much of a security system at the school or mansion?
.............I think thats about it for now it took me a while to think of some more questions, I think I'm running out. You've answered them all.
- (I have to resort to stupid questions now) Do you guys ever go to parties?
- What do you do for fun in NJ? (Did I ask that already?)
Oh well...
talk to you later!

I just stock up on microwave food and sandwich meat. It's pretty cheap, and I'm sure it's great for your health! My parents were a little... worrisome too, but they didn't make me go through all that. I don't know about living situation after the first year, but in first year, all the female students stay in the Carriage House. In my year, one of the girls moved in with two guys from the school, two others moved in with each other, and one other is staying by herself I believe. I don't know what the three first year girls are doing next year. Even if you don't find someone to move in with, the school will still allow you to stay in their housing as long as their are open slots. There's usually a few second and third year people still living in the school's housing.
There's a few close banks. Bank of America and I think PNC are less than a mile from the school. There are Wachovias and some others that I can't think of at the moment, but you might have to go a bit further.
I don't want to think about how much money I spend a week. Averaging in rent and bills, now I probably spend around 300 a week. In school housing it was less, because that money was paid up front.
I don't think there's ANY security system at the mansion. The school has an alarm I guess, that's probably it.
They had parties every now and then last year. Others seem to like them, but I'm not much of a party goer and I don't drink, so I'm sure I was having less fun than everyone else.
I don't really do much for fun. During the school year I was too busy to do much besides see the occassional movie, and maybe visit with some others from the school. During the summer, I'm practically bored out of my mind. That's me though, I just don't go out much, and I've not had much luck getting in contact with the other people I know that stayed here over the summer. I'm sure there's something fun to do somewhere, I just haven't done it.

Hah, yeah I know... I don't have a lot of close friends and I don't drink or smoke or anything like that (maybe thats why). But I like to have fun, and Im always eager to meet new people... so I was just wondering about the party thing for future preferences.
Here in Wisconsin the only "fun things" to do are drinking and bowling... and because I'm not a fan of either of those , my life mostly results in sleeping and drawing.
I'm not worried about my housing situation for next year just yet... I'm trying not to get ahead of myself.
Sorry about the facebook request thing. You were probably kind of weirded out when you saw me on there. I don't have an art program on my computer so most of my time on my laptop is spent practicing on a WACOM tablet on the facebook graffiti application or once in a while on some oekaki art board. I also think facebook could be a good way to get connected to future classmates.
Well looks like I'v run out of questions for now... but most likely I'll be back with more soon.

Yeah, like I said, I'm sure there's fun to be had if you go looking for it. I just usually don't.
The facebook thing didn't bother me. I didn't know who it was at first, but it didn't take long to figure it out.
Most of my friends on there are classmates from the school, so that could get you started.
If you need a free art program to use your tablet, there's a few out there. I've never used it myself, but Gimp is supposed to be like the freebie answer to Photoshop, though not nearly as powerful, of course. Open Canvas is also a program a lot of people use. I think they both work with the tablet's pressure sensitivity, unlike the graffiti app on facebook.

The school doesn't have anything set up, no. The students usually get together and have it set up. You won't be paying much because it'll probably be split between whoever's in the Carriage house and in the Mansion. Problem is, with that many people on one connection, I don't know how well it will run. There were only 10 of us in the Clinton House, and it was pretty crappy. I don't know if that was the reason, because we just had problems with it in general, but there's usually 20+ in the Mansion, plus whoever's in the Carriage house, so who knows.

well I hope that all works out for me. My parents are scratching their heads over the internet subject. They are really surprised that there isn't a hook up. But thats ok, I'm sure there's a cyber cafe around.
speaking of "around" is there a close laundromat? How about a Walmart? I try not to make it a habit to shop there, but it's cheap and I have some old gift cards.
Do you know if that convenience store by the school is a pharmacy?

bonvillain In reply to Carliihde [2008-08-09 18:00:57 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't worry about the internet too much. Like I said, they get it hooked up, it just might not be the best connection.
I'm not sure how close the laundromat is from the Mansion and the Carriage House. There was one less than a mile from us, and we'd normally just walk to it. It's probably only a mile or two from where you'll be, but there's probably one closer. I think when they give you the housing information sheets, it lists the address of the closest one.
There's a Walmart, which is right near the mall shopping area, a few miles from the housing. Their food selection is a little... lacking however. They have food, but I'm used to them slapping a full sized supermarket in their stores, and this one is only several, half aisles.
And yeah, the store in the parking lot of the school is a Walgreens.

Hey a few more questions.
I noticed that they require you to bring your own art work station for your room. What kind of art table do you have, and where did you find it?
I know I asked you this before, but my mother saw how long the distance is and she was really surprised, do a lot of people Bike from the mansion to school? Because it looks like a very difficult ride. My mom wants me to get set up with a bus pass. If I rode my bike am I riding on a highway?
Do you know anything about the R.As for the dorms? The resident assistant? How does a student get hired for that job? and is there an R.A. for everyone of the residences?
I am Currently in Pennsylvania waiting impatiently for the 4th of September so I will probably be on here a lot for lack of anything better to do.
I guess I'll see you soon

I bought mine from the school art store at the beginning of first year, but the legs are all messed up on it now. It works, but I have to keep it propped up. I don't know if it was a crappy table, or if I just moved it around so much that it weakened the joints. I do know I wasn't the only one that has had that problem though, so I'd be careful about which one you buy.
As far as I know, no one biked to school from anywhere. Like I said before, it's maybe a little over a mile so distance isn't really that bad. You wouldn't be going over any highways, but the streets you'd be traveling on can be pretty busy, so it might be a bit difficult as far as that goes.
There were two RAs for the mansion. One dropped out near the beginning of last year, and the other graduated, so I don't know who's doing it next year. To get hired, you just ask basically. You get like $700 at the end of the year, but you still have to pay the normal fee to live there.

hmmm,
well, I also know that we should have an art program on the computer. I know we've talked about this before, but does the school require you to have a specific program? Like photoshop creative suite? and if they do, do they supply it for you, or do they give you examples of places you can buy it? How often are you required to use your computer for art projects? Do you need a printer or scanner? or can you just hook up for computer at the library?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
bonvillain In reply to Carliihde [2008-08-24 03:46:39 +0000 UTC]
They started issuing laptops in the art kits. The first year they did this was the year after I was in first year, so I have no idea what they include with it, if anything. Since they changed things, they may require you to use the computer more often for projects than they did for us, so I really can't say. I know you do some digital lettering, and probably some coloring for assignments. The school computers have Photoshop and all that, but I don't know if there's a copy of it in your art kit. They have scanners at the school, but I've never used them, so I don't know how good they are. They also have printers, so you shouldn't absolutely have to have one. There's wireless internet at the school, so you should be able to use it with your laptop.
