Even the great Super Saiyans find awe within themselves at the sight of the Eternal Dragon and Purunga - Both dragons of the Dragon Balls themselves. The Great Dark Ryuujin has nothing to fear from an angry Saiyan. Even if it is Goku.

I don't think Piccolo ever killed the Eternal Dragon. I do know the dragon was destroyed, and had to be re-created by Dende, and it was able to give two wishes - instead of just the one. But the only reason that was possible, was because the Eternal Dragon's statue was destroyed.
The Dragonballs themselves are indestructable (even though Krillian does try to destroy them in the Namek Saga (boardering on the Frieza Saga) But the Ginyu force stops him.
