Seriously, my favorite in your gallery is arguably the easiest one you did. I like the mirror shot. The quality of the phone photo simplified your face into something that almost looks like a work of art. It's beautiful.

Denis Loubet signed up for DevArt? Sweet. Salutations!

Long time listener. Your discussion-which-shall-not-be-namned is definitely what got me questioning the concept of free will and am now a Determinist, so hey, thanks for that. Also been using an old android picture you drew as my avatar in Steam for ages due to elegant simplicity.

Ha! You're a determinist just in time for me to become a...actually I don't know what to call it, but it's not determinism.

I've come to the conclusion that quantum effects such as atomic decay cause an otherwise mechanical universe to be non-deterministic. We're still robots, but the future is not written in stone, and thus our mechanical decisions make a difference.

(And quantum effects have macroscopic consequences. For instance, if an atom had decayed in just the wrong place at just the wrong time, and gave Abraham Lincoln deadly cancer as a small boy, the decisions I would be making today, if I even existed, would be drastically different.)

So we live in a mechanical universe that accommodates random input. I like it!

And thanks for the kind words!

Hulderin In reply to dloubet [2011-12-11 03:20:14 +0000 UTC]

Well I don't really disagree with that, since it's more of a philosophical position for me than a stance in Physics (not being a physicist and all). Rolling a dice does not equal making decisions, obviously, and that'd also apply to being being a billiards-ball that some weirdo in the audience keeps throwing grains of sand at that might occasionally deviate the path slightly.

As for historical determinism I don't see how it applies, since the book is already written in that regard. The past has been determined and for it to be different would also require including different determinants (such as the atom decaying in a manner different way to how it did, because obviously it didn't. Might as well say "If Abraham Lincoln was killed by a meteorite..").

One thought has struck my mind way back when I was listening to the show and reading up on philosophical Determinism, though.. How is Compatibilism different to colloquial Agnosticism (in the sense of avoiding the issue itself)? The others don't ever seem to disagree with you on what it actually means, but rather contend that it only counts if it's a person, which makes no sense and seems purely emotional, or that "we just feel like we have it"....Those aren't arguments against anything proposed and they firmly state how they agree with the foundational premises of philosophical Determinism, yet they argue against it. Would you agree that it's a false "Third option" in the sense Agnosticism is used as a false "Neither believe or disbelieve, we just don't know!" but replacing what we don't know with what we can "feel"?

A feeling I don't share, FYI, since I can often be introspective and be aware of the determinants causing certain actions. Once you stop claiming "Free Will" I've found that that concept just feels alien to you (maybe not dissimilar to how Matt has mentioned hearing music and feeling "Filled with the Holy Spirit" but now just recognize it as how people can react to music? No idea. Was never a Theist.).

On a silly side-note after such a long message: Maybe Determinism came more naturally for a Swede like myself due to our long and proud Norse heritage where absolutely everything from beginning to end was "destined" to happen and not even the Gods themselves can change that! March unto RagnarΓΆk!
