Your works are magnificent! I've never seen anything quite like yours. You have a great eye for detail, and still make it possible to see the whole picture. Some of your images are so detailed, I've mistaken them for photographs at first.
I am in love with your works. Please keep up the great work.

I wouldn't call it a full-blown tutorial, but I can give you some tips:
1. Don't be afraid! Oil paints are no big deal! Just make sure you protect anything you don't want to get paint on.
2. Try small canvases to start with - a big blank canvas is pretty daunting to anyone. I paint as small as 5"x7" because I get to try a lot of ideas quickly on a lot of canvases. Then I try bigger versions of my favourites using the small version as a reference.
3. Cover your canvas with a an acrylic under-painting. Nothing fancy, just a thin coat of a single neutral colour. I mix orange and burnt umber. I started doing this because my style is kind of loose and it makes sure that there is no bare canvas peeping out between the brush strokes. Another benefit is the colour of the under-painting can help pull the painting together visually.
4a. First method (the one I use): Sketch out your subject with a slightly darker acrylic paint.
5a. Start with the darks and gradually work towards the lighter colours/values. Make sure that your brush is kept fairly clean so you don't muddy the colours and you should be able to paint wet on wet.
4b. An alternative method (the one I used to use): put as much detail as possible into your sketch and then...
5b. ...use a medium (e.g. Liquin) to thin the paint and apply thin layers of colour. The medium will help the oils dry quickly (a few days) and you can apply layer after layer. This method is pretty good because you can see the painting develop over time.
6. Clean up with white spirit first then a little soap and water.
7. Wait at least 6 weeks to 2 months to varnish.
8. You're done!
WORST CASE SCENARIO: You scrape it off and start again. No biggie.
GOOD LUCK!!!

Hi there! I just found your work on DA courtesy of your latest DD. Congratulations for that by the way.
Your work is beautiful. And I love your optimism in your ID statement. Keep making artwork like this, and you won't need that day job for long.

Dude, awesome stuff in your gallery! I've been dying to try oil painting, but have never gotten around to it. The texture it creates just rocks x) Is it tricky to work with?

maccski In reply to Unpredictabloo [2012-02-27 11:40:27 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the compliment! Oils are not tricky at all. IMHO they're easier to use than acrylics. The reason some people get put off is that you need turps or taltine for clean-up and they take weeks to dry (if you paint like I do).
