thanks for the feedback!! My tec. is still a painting, just a long process with starting very light muted / pastel colors, and then keep building each layer (once the other layer dry's) on top and work my way darker as I go. I tend to paint over most of the color below, using thicker layers and leaving lower colors to pop thru and causing a multi color effect in the same space. Pop up my Field of Daisies II and then zoom in close, you will see what I rambling on about!! You build as you go and run pretty wet I believe, so the blend is more uniform than mine. I slowly change the color and hue in small steps, more of a "baby step" blend, then a wash blend.

Thanks for the background on how you paint. Afraid I still don't understand but that has more to do with my ignorance than your explanation. I really love the results of all your patience. I have been focusing on acrylics lately and I also layer. Unfortunately my "layering" involves painting black gesso over mistakes/paintings that did not turn out quite as I had intended. Needless to say, I have a lot of black canvases sitting around waiting for me to do something. I think my greatest wish is to develop some kind of technique that would give my work a unique look/feel and turn my "not bad" paintings into something I feel I could call art. Any feedback or advise on any of my paintings would be much appreciated. Thanks again and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

an easy one and a way to solve your "black canvas" issue would be to experiment with texture either "in" the gesso when you re-gesso your black canvas's, or creating a texture in the gesso, like my wave effect in the Field of Daises (look closely at the painting on DV, you CAN see it. Really well in the middle sky!!) You can buy silicone additives at some places, or just add some fine sand and mix it in, then go from there. Or gesso the canvas, let it thicken a little, then add some waves where you water will be, or wave the ski ...just have fun! Or do some spot re-gesso, like your kind of already doing, and texrure and/or wave that area...!!

You are so welcome. Your paintings are really inspiring. I consider them a challenge to get better myself. Did you develop your techniques for painting water yourself or did you learn from someone else? I have never seen anything like them before and I am in awe.

Thank you so much for your kind remarks.
I actually developed my techniques for painting water
myself through a lot of plein air painting, where one observes
and analyses what is going on.
Now I do a lot from photos, but the paintings very rarely look
like the reference because I use experience to develop the look of
the water.
I still do some plein air and never stop looking
So, really, the technique developed itself, through the looking.
And it's taken years to develop..........I've been painting water for
thirty years, since I emigrated with my family to Sydney, which is
a city surrounded with water.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. It sounds like I should get outside to practice painting. So far I have never painted anyplace except for my basement. Always from photos or my imagination. It is funny that I don't think I ever took the time to look closely enough at the nature around me to be able to capture it on the canvas. I guess I just need to be patient, observe more and study the live subject more. Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it.
It seems that Australia is producing some marvelous artists. Is there something in the air or water down there. I particularly like your work and the paintings of Artsaus. Never been to Australia, but have always wanted to visit both Australia and New Zealand.

Thank you also for the Watch and the fav. I'm having a lot of fun and hope to get better. Right now I am having trouble learning how to stop trying to make a painting look like the picture and instead make it a work of art. You seem to have figured that out just fine. Do you have any tips that you could share? It seems that you use both acrylics and oils. Which do you prefer and how do you decide which to use for a given painting? Also how do you see the beautiful colors in your paintings before you start? Sorry to have so many questions, but I really need help. By the way, my wife and I also have 5 children. Thanks again.

Hello, yes I do work in acrylic, oil and watercolours. I tend to not work in oils in the Winter as they take forever to dry, in the English climate! I love experimenting with all mediums and it is a good way to learn, but I definitely seem to have a preference for acrylics at the moment.
I tend to work on three or four paintings at the same time and like to rotate what I am working on so I can look at the image with fresh eyes. I used to use photos a lot, for references, when I first started painting and got a bit obsessed about trying to make my painting a duplicate of it, but now they simply inspire an idea, in the beginning and then I go off on a tangent.
I am a bit crazy about colour and I think my lack of formal training makes me break rules. Feel free to ask me any questions and so pleased you are enjoying your art. Nice to meet someone else with a big family! Ann Marie

Hi, thanks for responding. It is very helpful to get insights from true artists like yourself. I was wondering if I was doing something wrong because half way thru a painting I will get tired of it or lose track of where I was going with it and want to just put it aside. Maybe I will take your advice and work on 3-4 at the same time to keep them fresh. By the way, I really like your most recent submission - the one with the two dear by the lake or stream. The colors (as usual) are wonderul. It has a real Christmas or holiday feel to it. Thanks.

Thank you so much for these kind words. I'm happy that my paintings can make people feel a little bit of magic. When I started painting a few months ago I thought my basement would be the only place people could see my work. It is great to have a place like deviantart to share. Thanks again.
