Stock artists can make up whatever rules they want for their stock. That doesn't mean all of the rules they make are the best. My stance is that if you are going to use a watermark, its effectiveness at preventing copying/reuse/reselling is directly proportional to the amount of detail it covers.

For example, putting a name in 12pt font in the corner of an 8x10 won't accomplish anything, since a copier can simply crop that tiny portion of the bottom of the image and sell it with no one the wiser.
If you put a watermark on a solid colored area, it's easy to paint the same color right over it, effectively leaving no trace of any watermark without altering the content.
If the watermark is very thin or faint, then it can be relatively easy to clean up the areas it covers using intermediate level Photoshop skills.
If the watermark is just a word using a universally common font, such as Arial, a Photoshoper can make the same text and adjust it to be exactly the same size and spacing, so that they can make a selection of that specific area of the image and either mask it so they can paint over just those spots, or play with curves/levels to color correct it to match the surrounded colors and values.

If a stock artist wants people to not use watermarks or specifically the dA watermark, then that's their choice. Then it's up to the person using the stock to make the watermark and it is their understanding of creating watermarks that determines the effectiveness.

I understand why the DA copyright sign must be so large though I still think there should be a way to make a little less intrusive- and maybe more on other images. (I just realized I have a few images where it is barely seen)

I am just a little torn by this stocker's new rules. It creates a risk of theft for those who can't make their own copyright sign (aka computer idiot traditional artist me) just for the sake of retaining design of the image. And I a person who can't even sign their name on their work because it distracts me. It just leaves me with a dissatisfaction, that in order used said stock you have do something that seems... a disservice to the artist using the stock.

Bawh, may I just won't use their stock. Thanks for your input and indulging my curiosity.

No problem. It's hard to work with watermarks because they're a double-edged sword. They help you control your art but they also hinder the view of it. It's an inherent catch-22 of using the internet. In person, protecting your art is much easier. You can demand no photography and of course a person can't just redraw or repaint something identical on the spot. This is why whenever you upload something to the internet, the best practice is to always keep things low res at the very least. Sure some people may still try to sell something, like a postcard, but you'll always have something bigger and better, plus the reputation of being the original artist.
