# About me
(Shoot, it's difficult to play with paws...)So, first things first, I'm imaginary.
Just very good at interacting with the tangible world; especially with keyboards and fretboards.
Some random non-inspirational quotes:
"Reality is my fiction, fiction is my fantasy and Norway is my world."
"I was present at the cremation and at his sonβs request, brought the marshmallows, but few of us could think of anything but our pain."
<- One of the three or four... maybe five.. ah, hundred or so reasons I live... though she's certainly one of the most important ones!!! <3 <3 <3

Oh, and the rest you're uploading here on DA?

Not exactly, but in essence yes! Here I usually put up slightly less serious things... to me anyway! There's still tonnes that's only for my concert audiences (uploading things on the net is bothersome too!)

I have no idea! What goes well with black? Mine are a slightly dark-blue!

Well, dark blue goes quite nicely with black, so I think I'll just use that. Thanks! :D
(And I tend to use a very dark blue for black sometimes; it makes the picture look more colourful!)

Just out of curiosity, what are all of the instruments you own? (Any others that you don't own but do play?)
π: 0 β©: 1
randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-13 07:52:04 +0000 UTC]
Oh man... This is going to take a while to type out (a * will mean that I don't own it but have constant access, ** means that I don't own it and can only play the instrument sometimes, also, they're not all in my house ).
Keyboards:
Piano
Fortepiano*
Harpsichord
Portative organ
Positive organ
Clavichord*
Pipe Organ**
Guitar
Extended guitars (7* and 8 strings)
6, 7, 8, 9*, 10 coursed renaissance lutes
Three baroque lutes (11, 13, 15 courses)
Two Theorbos (Italian and French)
Archlute
Vihuela
Viola da Gamba* (not so good at this one!)
Cello* (nor this)
Hurdy Gurdy
The Oud and a few other medieval lutes/guitars
and finally a few zithers and dulcimers.
It may look like a long list, but many of these instruments use very similar techniques to be played, so it is easy to switch from one to another!

Nice
Are any of the instruments dual manual? (Pipe organ would make sense, but is the Harpsichord?)

randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-13 16:32:03 +0000 UTC]
The pipe organ, of course!~ I've played ones with four manuals!
Two of my harpsichords do have two manuals, usually I make one manual have a buff so I can contrast the volume and tone, since you can't press harder on the keys to get a louder sound on the harpsichord!

Yay plucked strings
I kinda like how a clavichord sounds, but I like to have 2 manuals... I believe I saw a 2 manual clavichord on youtube, but it looked like a DIY project XD
π: 0 β©: 1
randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-14 01:29:19 +0000 UTC]
The clavichord is pretty cool since you can change the tone after striking the string! But I don't think two manual models exist! The key mechanism would have to be way complex!
π: 0 β©: 1
Volk-oseba In reply to randomonlooker [2010-12-14 02:47:59 +0000 UTC]
You could just have 2 separate clavichords stacked on top of each other
Yeah though, manual vibrato on a keyed instrument... unusual.

randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-14 06:07:58 +0000 UTC]
There would be no point! I mean, the only point of having an extra manual is so that you can change the character of the sound instantaneously! No point if it's the same instrument, as whatever you can do with two manuals, you can do on one!

Volk-oseba In reply to randomonlooker [2010-12-14 06:30:58 +0000 UTC]
Hands don't get in each other's way as easily. my left hand can move right under my right hand... you can play the same note (or the same chord even) with both hands at the same time... meh. I'm just used to using a 2 manual technique is all.
π: 0 β©: 1
randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-14 10:54:01 +0000 UTC]
Yes, I know! I've been playing since I was three!
(I did say that there's no point to having two manuals with the same sound for that very reason!)
π: 0 β©: 1
Volk-oseba In reply to randomonlooker [2010-12-14 17:50:41 +0000 UTC]
I play on 2 manuals with the same sound. I like it. Don't question my subjective opinion
They could have 2 slightly different clavichords on top of each other... but I want a 2 manual clavi. (It'd be really easy to do if it were an electric clavichord... err... clavinet XD
just modify the signal.)

What instruments do you play? I mean, unless you're an organist, having two manuals is a pretty tough thing to do!

Volk-oseba In reply to randomonlooker [2010-12-14 23:16:20 +0000 UTC]
Hammond organ (if you get a chance, play one... but don't expect it to be like a pipe organ. The sound is more percussive, and there's a little clicking sound each time you hit a key, but the drawbars allow for more sonic experimentation than stops do.)
saxophone
guitar
Mostly I don't play anything else. I have a wooden flute, a recorder, and a penny whistle, but I never really use those...
I have a cheesy sounding keyboard from the 90's too and I guess my computer counts as a sampling&modeling synth, but those never come close to real instruments.
π: 0 β©: 1
randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-14 23:20:21 +0000 UTC]
Ooo, nice! Of course I know what that is!!! As for more sonic experimentation, I wouldn't be too sure, there are some organs with hundreds of stops! But they don't have the eight 'levels' that the Hammond does! (Pipe organs are grand: [link] , with me playing~)
Hehe, quite true!
π: 0 β©: 1
Volk-oseba In reply to randomonlooker [2010-12-14 23:32:38 +0000 UTC]
9 positions on each drawbar including the off position, each drawbar is supposed to be a pure sine wave... take that to the 9th power because there's 9 drawbars per manual... so ignoring vibrato settings, percussion, reverb and leslie animation (if the organ has a leslie) there's already over 300 million possible drawbar registrations per manual. That's more than "hundreds" last I checked XD
Naturally, not all of them are usable though... (not in a literal sense... they just don't all sound good.)
I'd love to play the pipe organ, but it seems like churches and theaters are migrating away from those in favor of some guy with an acoustic guitar... not that I have anything against guitars, but they just can not compare with the king of instruments.
π: 0 β©: 1
randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-14 23:53:27 +0000 UTC]
Hm, when I say hundreds, I also mean any thinkable combination of the hundreds! But yes, you're right! At least with organs every combination is good! (well, unless you use lots of those stops that double on the fifth and that sort of stuff )
π: 0 β©: 1
Volk-oseba In reply to randomonlooker [2010-12-15 03:26:54 +0000 UTC]
You can choose just third and fifth harmonics with no fundamental on the hammond XD
Then you can add a cheesy vibrato... actually, the vibrato line capacitors gain capacitance over time, making the vibrato sound even more cheesy than it normally would... because the frequency modulation is more extreme...
~subject change here~
When I get my own house, I'd like to have an organ somewhere near the front of the house. During halloween, I could play Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565. Scare the kids
π: 0 β©: 1
randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-15 04:31:27 +0000 UTC]
You can do that in a proper organ too! But there's no point really, unless you need to play notes that aren't really on the keyboard (but you can do that with the octave doublings)!
Yeah, I know! I've played electronic organs, before! And cheesy is the word, the experiences I've had with organs show that all too well...
Ha! You know, I've got a small practice pipe organ in my livingroom, they're called house organs or orgues de salon, not very wide in scope, but perfect for small stuff! But why something so clichΓ©? Play them some Gigout or Widor!
π: 0 β©: 1
Volk-oseba In reply to randomonlooker [2010-12-15 05:11:52 +0000 UTC]
Certain Hammond organs (early 60's and prior) stick to the "cheap replacement for pipe organ" formula. By the 70's everybody made cheesy transistor organs... farfisas were probably among the worst. There's a website called "combo organ heaven" that has information about a few different varieties... dunno why anyone would want to know anything about transistor organs [with the possible exception of the Vox Continental, which could have been the least cheesy of the bunch... given the right settings, naturally.]
Actually, the scanner vibrato sounds decent if the capacitors are replaced... but it's still nowhere near as good as the earlier (and more expensive) chorus generator... Luckily there are some organs with both the chorus generator and a 32 note AGO spec pedalboard
I think I prefer to stick to electric organs because (at least on some of the early organs) the 16' goes all the way down
Shaky shaky shaky
And since I prefer wooden cabinets and simplistic (read: easy to repair) circuitry, vintage electromechanical seems to be the only way to go... [the cheesiest ones are solid state] but I do admit the Wurlitzer electrostatic reed organ made a more convincing pipe organ sound than a Hammond... (Plus I like the sound of the name "Wurlitzer" even if it's not paired with "The Mighty" in reference to one of their theater pipe organs. The vast majority of electric organs (especially those targeted at the home market) are complete trash... I almost feel sad for people trying to sell them, because I know there's no demand... better instruments are available for free.)
As for the clichΓ©... we may recognize clichΓ©s, but small children do not. Besides, I don't want those kids to go through the rest of their lives wondering what song they heard that one halloween... there are too many songs i've heard that I could never find later... I'm not cruel enough to do that to someone else.
Oh, by the way... just to give you an idea what sort of sound I can get... My organ (other than different cabinetry) is the same as the organ A Whiter Shade of Pale was originally recorded on... Paid $0 for it XD

randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-15 10:47:40 +0000 UTC]
Hehe, those sounded rather bad... but I guess that for practice purposes they were fine (after all the design was for home, not concert use! Since before the fifties people still played 'proper' organs most of the time. I guess the cheesiness is just like a clichΓ©; been used way too much!
Oo, thirty two notes, nice! Many organs that could do with more pedals sometimes have two octaves... which is nice, but some repertoire asks for more and then you have to compress the octaves, which is not cool. I'm afraid my knowledge of electronic organs is nil, I mean I've played a few for fun (I think it was a Hammond Bee three or something like that! I don't quite remember, had some nice tones though!)
Hehe, some of the organs I've played have 32', those are absolutely wicked, but way loud.
Ah, quite right! But why only play one piece? The T&F is nice, but there are plenty of other terrifying pieces which aren't exactly fringe, I suggest Gigout's Toccata in B minor (very cool one!) and the intermezzo from Widor's sixth organ symphony.
I love that song, ha, congratulations! You know, you should post a recording or two of yours up here!

A B3? Those are the most popular Hammonds for jazz, rock, blues, etc. 25 note pedalboard, inverse key presets, no internal speakers. A-100's are like B3's with internal speakers.
For classical, it has to be an RT3 or model E... those are the ones with the AGO pedal claviers... (Or D-100, which is an RT3 with internal speakers)
That one piece was just to get across the general idea...
I'd like to get a recording, but there's a few problems... my lack of a decent microphone, the cockatiels trying to be heard over the organ, and my family complaining about the volume. Want some birds? They bite... Not to mention the fact that I don't have a leslie speaker yet, so i'd have to use my unmodified cheesy vibrato XD
I play the bass notes with the pedals... those pedals really stink as far as organ sounds go (true of all the home models, but the concert/church models don't have that problem) but they can replace an electric bass alright.

My! Are you a walking encyclopædia on electronic organs or something!?
Ah, well... birds always add a nice touch to any recording, I think!

Yeah though, pretty much. I know too much... then again, I don't know enough to do ALL of my own repairs, so... I guess I'm not the greatest encyclopædia...
I practice with volume low or while nobody is home...

randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-16 02:42:05 +0000 UTC]
Well, an encyclopædia doesn't really need to do anything but give information!I couldn't even begin to dream of repairing a pipe organ, much too complex... perhaps my simpler ones are more doable, but I usually hire someone (no time!).
π: 0 β©: 1
Volk-oseba In reply to randomonlooker [2010-12-16 02:53:48 +0000 UTC]
Complexity isn't the issue for me... as long as I can easily locate the problem. I've already made a couple of repairs...

randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-16 14:05:29 +0000 UTC]
Talking about complexity, did you know that there's pianos with pedals like an organ!?
Wild if you ask me. I played one and I think I ought to buy it as well, it's too awesome!

Volk-oseba In reply to randomonlooker [2010-12-16 14:29:07 +0000 UTC]
I prefer to avoid pianos at this point because I'm never sure how the action will feel... I absolutely despise Yamaha grand pianos XD

randomonlooker In reply to Volk-oseba [2010-12-16 15:17:44 +0000 UTC]
