Honest question; do you know anything about molten salt thorium reactors? I would like to know everything about molten salt thorium reactors. Do you feel up to doing a spantastic comic of brilliant clarity (damn, 62 pages? EPIC) to explain molten salt reactors to the world? Or, if you're a little busy for that (perfectly understandable), can you explain to me why we don't currently use molten salt reactors in the USA?
Please note that you are entirely free to answer "no" to any and all previous questions - I simply felt obligated by destiny to ask.)

Honestly my knowledge of salt cooled reactor designs is minimal.
As for why we don't have them, how to easily explain this.. reactor designs have "Generations". We are currently running Generation 3 plants, loosely, and we're about to come into Generation 3+, which will be ABWRs, AP1000s, EPRs, and so forth. These are all water cooled, uranium reactors.
HOWEVER, Generation 4, which is currently purely theoretical and only on paper, will possibly include salt or liquid metal cooled thorium designs. Google for the GenIV International Forum for more information on these designs. As said, it's pure theory, and we MIGHT see the prototypes roll around around 2025, but that's the soonest we'll see these designs.
I THINK we saw some salt cooled reactors as experimental designs, but like gas cooled these reactors have since been shut down and decommissioned. Money plays a big part in whether or not a reactor design goes commercial: if the design can't pay itself off and make money, no dice. That's why the current Pebble Bed design is being mothballed: it can't make money, it in fact sinks into the red quite rapidly, and the fuel can't be repossessed either.
So my guess on why we don't have them is they were either uneconomical, or just too complicated to commercialize. I imagine we'll see them soon enough though because GenIV moves away from Uranium.

I'd bookmarked your "Nukes for Dummies" comic some time ago, but never got around to reading it until you linked it on Fark yesterday. (Dear GODS, there was some toxic DERP in some of those threads!!) Very, VERY awesome! I've got a passing knowledge of nuclear power and some of the stuff that goes into it, but this really helped clarify a lot of things. I guess that I'm just a visual person.
And I support everyone else's suggestion to get this printed. Perhaps as a children's coloring book? Not only would you help educate those who really need it before they get indoctrinated with stupidity, you might "accidentally" educate their parents, who are the idiots spewing "ZOMG NOO-KYOO-LAR IS TEH EVIL!" in the first place.
Also, I notice that you are a fan of Prachett and Katamari Damacy. I must applaud your superior sense of taste! Ooooh, nuke plant pics... *Wanders back into gallery.*
