So what'd you think of the Nintendo Switch presentation?

To be honest, I regret staying up for it (aired at 11PM for me), and the presentation was the traditional investor's style. I enjoy the Nintendo Directs much more, but it's understandable that Nintendo aimed to showcase the capabilities of the Switch (which didn't quite appeal to me).
My opinion? I'm worried for Nintendo. I get the whole casual gimmick vibe from it with the 1-2 Switch game. There is going to be paid online play in Fall, which I'm sure Splatoon players are more than willing to cough up. Mario Kart Deluxe is...well a nice port, but I don't feel very convinced to rebuy a game, same with Smash 4 if it gets ported and then it goes back to being paid online play. The battery life isn't a good sign either.
I really hope they do well, though it has potential. Super Mario Odyssey..... hmm well, it certainly was VERY impressive and had lively colors, and the part with New Donk City (lol) is fine, but annoys the heck out of me....is seeing normal humans.....come on, please don't pull a Sonic Adventures/2006. It really feels off seeing Mario run around with regular humans. Even the ones from the Sunshine beta were fine, but this...I dunno. Oh and Zelda? Unpopular opinion here, it doesn't interest me that much. The graphic seems very bland to me, but hey it's really the gameplay that should count!
My Zelda game was Phantom Hourglass/Wind Waker and I haven't since tried the new ones. I have to catch up playing Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, so then maybe I'll be hyped as well for Breath of the Wild. XD;;
So overall, I suppose I'm more on the unimpressed side of Nintendo.

Hey, great to hear from you again!Β Β
Long post ahead. Just a warning. I have quite a bit to say myself.
I didn't stay up for it. I had an 8am class the following morning, so it wouldn't have been a good idea. I just Googled recaps of the presentation when I got the time.Β
I'm cautiously optimistic myself. I'm not blown away by the specs, but... idk, I don't really have a solid opinion on the system just yet. I'm a fan of Nintendo games and want it to succeed, but if the specs truly are awful, then I'm willing to accept that fact. But what matters more to me is if the games are fun.
The battery life doesn't seem that impressive for me, but I guess I'll see what I think of it if/when I eventually field test it myself. I'm not fond of the idea of paid online, but that seems to be a rather divisive topic anyway. It doesn't really affect me personally, since I never play online... cause we have crappy internet where I live. And because I'm a hermit who simply doesn't care for online multiplayer.Β Β
Of course it's a bit disappointing that the Switch won't be backwards-compatible, obviously due to the change to cartridges (which in itself I find interesting). I probably won't be getting any ports of Wii U games that I already have unless they offer something I can't refuse. Or if it just ends up working out for the better, space-wise, since having both consoles set up at once would be a hassle. Maybe if they port Pikmin 3 and Smash 4, I'll consider phasing out the Wii U, lol.
What really worries me is the (so far) revealed launch window games for the console. Launch day only brings us like 4 games, none of which are selling points for me, frankly. Not saying anything bad about Breath of the Wild, but I just never really got into Zelda. I've watched my brother play Twilight Princess on the Wii several years back, and I started Wind Waker on the GameCube, but school is starting to pick up, so it hasn't been a high priority. But I feel like BotW will be the game Nintendo is really depending on to pull the console through until more games come out. Which feels like a really risky move. But it may work out, since BotW looks like it could be a game that you could play for a long time. 1-2 Switch might be useful for learning how to use the console, but I'd rather not buy the console and only have 1 game to go with it.
Right now the only games revealed that I'm anticipating are Sonic Mania, Mario Kart 8 (if it has enough new content to be worth getting), Splatoon 2 (maybe; I recently bought the first Splatoon that I haven't gotten around to playing yet), and most of all, Super Mario Odyssey. That's the one that's really got my attention- and of course it's one that I'll have to wait the longest for. Yeah, the presence of normal-looking humans looks pretty weird, but I can look past it if the game is really fun. I did for other games, like Sonic Adventure. It reminds me a lot of Sunshine, and I freaking loved that game. As for the rest of the launch games, just... eh. Idk, I'm just not sold on them. But I may change my mind later.
And of course I'm disappointed by the lack of any mention of Pikmin 4. Assuming that game is still coming out at all, that is. Miyamoto mentioned Pikmin in December of last year, so I don't think it's been forgotten. But considering that in the past it's been described as "very close to completion," you'd think they would have something to show for it by now if it (and I'm assuming so) were coming out on the Switch. That sure would have gotten me excited for the console. And excited in general, lol.
Overall, I honestly don't think I'll be picking up a Switch at launch day. There just won't be any games that I'll want to play right out of the gate. Plus I guess it'll give me time to watch for feedback on the console. I can't say I'm extremely confident about it right now, but who knows what'll happen. Some people are speculating that it'll be like the original 3DS- slow, awkward launch, but explodes later. We'll see.

Impressive reply there~ Β
I don't think I'll type as much but I sure enjoyed reading your thoughts. (never mind I wrote a lotβ¦)
Smart move that you didn't stay up for it. I had to get up earlier than you (5:30) so that really crippled me haha. Other than Smash 4 and Kart I really don't play online with people. Since Nintendo drops off backwards compatibility, and is moving towards paid online it seems they are doing a fresh start of some sort. I do like how the Switch uses small cartridges instead of CDs. That is at least somewhat saving space.
Nintendo is certainly relying on Breath of the Wild, because they know it'll pull through for the masses, but yeah other than said game people will only have to wait one month to get Mario Kart if they want. 1-2 Switch should've been a built-in game for the console like Wii Sports, but they're going Nintendo Land on it instead (if I recall correctly. It was bundled with the Wii U Deluxe, but still, this time it is flat out paying for it separately).
I still haven't played Splatoon even though I've had it since launch. XD;; (those online kids will destroy this old n00b here) I never got around to playing it, and I am too intimidated to even try at this point. It's a stupid reason of mine.
About Pikmin 4, there is still doubt that it may actually be the 3DS game. Although I think they're entirely different. Β There is a rumor that Pikmin 4 could actually be a reboot of the first game. I guess right now we can only hope it shows up at E3, haha. It may have been "close to completion," but according to the updates it took a backseat. And yeah, likewise. I would've been excited seeing something about it.
I got a console reserved just in case (preorders sell out too fast). amiibo taught me that. Speaking of amiibo, they raised the price of them by $3....and I felt $12.99 hurt my budget. Now I'm even more inclined to wait until they hit bargain bin, unless it's something I really want. If they make a Pikmin amiibo, I'll get them for sure, but don't pull a $16 price tag for a single Pikmin.....I'd probably still buy but that's eye gouging!
Even though I'll get the system, I got no game for it haha. I doubt they would undersupply Zelda. I'm not hot on playing it right now, but I find it funny that I'm game-less on the Switch, lol. We'll see.

BlueKirby96 In reply to saiiko [2017-01-22 14:23:54 +0000 UTC]
Why, thank you. ~Β Funnily enough, I actually do get up around 5:30 to give myself enough time to wake up and get ready to leave by 7:00, since I have a 20-30 minute commute to school from home.
I'll be happy if they can make cartridges work for the console. I honestly find them easier to store than CDs, since they're smaller and less delicate. I just hope that the games don't suffer in storage space.
If I were to play Splatoon, I'd probably just end up sticking to single player campaign, despite the fact that it's considered inferior to online multiplayer. I'd suffer the same fate as you, lol.
I don't think Pikmin 3DS is Pikmin 4 either. I'm convinced that they're separate games. As for the rumors of Pikmin 4 being a reboot... I've never come across any rumors like that, and the idea itself seems ridiculous to me. The first game is still pretty accessible, since they re-released it on Wii, which can be played on the Wii U. While Pikmin 1 is admittedly getting up there in age (around 16 years), I don't think it needs to be rebooted/remade, and I honestly don't want it to be. With the franchise being as small/short as it is, I think it needs more new material before trying anything like that. I just want something new in this continuity that continues the story and further expands the lore of the franchise, while offering fun gameplay. It's not like the first game is seriously flawed and in need of an overhaul.
Speaking of Pikmin 3DS, what are your thoughts on that so far?
I do kind of wonder how the supply of Switch consoles will be after launch, and how easy/hard it would be to get one if I never pre-ordered. I read that they're planning to release like 2 million consoles by the end of March, and I honestly don't know if that's ample, stingy, or just right. I just don't want it to end up like the NES Classic fiasco where they released a pitifully small number of units and a large chunk of them were snatched up by scalpers. But I doubt they'd do that with a major release console, since the company's future probably depends on it.
I'm honestly glad I never set out to collect every amiibo. They're cool and all, but with where I'm living and still being in school, I just don't have the space or money for that. And most of them I was never really interested in. I only bothered buying a few specifically for Smash Bros. characters I liked when amiibo first became a thing (Kirby, Pikachu, and Zelda for my brother), and Olimar and Mega Man just because I'm a fan of those franchises. And for Mega Man, I even got the special Gold amiibo from the Mega Man Legacy Collection box set. It's honestly the only reason I bought that, lol. I keep it in a plastic display case, along with a custom Totoro amiibo (made from a Pikachu) that I got from a Smash Bros. event some months back. I also bought an additional Olimar amiibo that I'm keeping mint in its packaging, just because. It's neat how Smash Bros. amiibos are compatible with some other games as well. I used my Olimar and Mega Man amiibos to get skins on Yoshi's Wooly World, for example. And yes, I probably would buy Pikmin amiibos, if they're not outrageously priced.
Like I said, I think I'll just wait for more games to come out before I get a Switch, that way I'll have more options when I buy the console. But if any surprise new updates are announced that are sellers for me, I may change my mind. Or I may go ahead and get one with 1-2 Switch and just wait a bit for Sonic Mania to come along. Idk, I can't decide. But if you ever get into it before I do, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!

Sorry for the late reply:
I think I have yet to break a game disc, but that doesn't mean I'm afraid that it'll happen one day. At least with cartridges that's a lower chance of happening. XD;;
Personally I wouldn't mind a reboot of the original Pikmin that much, but I certainly would prefer a new installment for sure. I'll be content either way as long as I get my Pikmin fill, haha. As for the 3DS one, well I'm hearing dreaded rumors it's developed by the same team that did Yoshi's New Island (which as far as I have heard across the board was not very impressive). That rumor coupled with people complaining that Pikmin is getting the Chibi Robo treatment definitely doesn't paint a rosy picture. However, personally I'm staying optimistic about it. C:The graphics are fine, though the animation jagged a bit, but the game may have been in an early development stage, so there's still time for it to polish (hopefully). Obviously the 3DS isn't in the same gameplay style as the console ones, but I welcome the side-scroller spin-off. My only hope is that this game doesn't get the same poor reception as the other recent Nintendo games.....the Pikmin franchise is so small that it really doesn't need a blow.
I don't think Nintendo would want to risk the Switch availability like they did with the NES Classic. As you say, their future is riding on it hard since Xbox and PS4 are ringing if not practically all of the customers in. Unless of course they pull a Wii repeat, but that really wouldn't be a smart idea. However, the Wii was revolutionary and even had Wii Sports build in to get people going on the new motion control. I don't really see it happening with the Switch, since 1-2 Switch isn't even built-in.
Originally my mentality about amiibo was the same as you (I'll buy characters that I like, or don't have a good figurine of), though I did end up collecting intensively, and TOO much (which I dearly regret) because now I'm sitting on international copies.....I guess many of us do have some buyer's remorse. I still have to put mine to use in games outside of Kart or Smash. That's neat that you got a custom Totoro. I wonder with the release of Pikmin 3DS, would that be a chance for Pikmin amiibo? At the very least there should be when the 4th console game comes out.Β
Haha I highly doubt I'll play the games before you do. I have such a huge game backlog that I'll never get to. (Still haven't played Twilight Princess after all)

Don't worry about not replying right away. I don't expect you to be checking in at dA all the time, lol.
My worries about Pikmin 4 being a reboot come from the fact that I don't want the entire Pikmin story/lore/universe just completely wiped out and done over again, and possibly done worse than before. I've been playing the Pikmin series since I was young (I want to say since I was like 8-10, since I was 8 when Pikmin 2, my first Pikmin game, came out) and I've grown invested in what we have now. I like the characters and their stories, notes on treasures and creatures, and if anything, I want to see Olimar get his ship back and return home. He's been through so much crap that he deserves a happy ending. If they just leave that hanging, I will not be happy.
There's still so much room for expanding the franchise's lore and characters, for me it would seem unsatisfying to just drop it and start over again. I've fallen in love with our small current cast of Hocoatians and Koppaites. It's actually one of the main reasons I'm so interested in the series' lore- I want to learn more about these humanlike alien people and their society. A bit unrelated to the main gameplay, but the characters' personal lives and culture are alluded to enough for me to want to learn more.Β
As for 3DS, like with the Switch, I'm cautiously optimistic. When I first found out about it, I was ecstatic! A new Pikmin game! But then my more rational side kicked in and started actually thinking about things. I'm fully aware that it's not going to be your regular Pikmin installment, and I'm not immediately up in arms over that fact alone. If it's still fun, I'll be fine with it being a different genre. But then again, I tend to be pretty lax with spinoffs that go in a pretty different direction than the main series, so my opinion may be more flimsy than others.
But part of me does wish that they tried out a different genre for a Pikmin spinoff, like an RPG or open-world adventure, or something else more imaginative. I do kind of agree with some people that a 2D platformer is kind of a lazy/bland go-to option for a spinoff, and to me it feels like a bit of a downgrade when it comes from a open, 3D game series such as Pikmin; I feel it could have had more potential with other genres. But part of that sentiment might come from the fact that I'm just growing sick of 2D platformers in general, especially in this day and age where consoles and games are more than capable of running much bigger things. It's the reason I'm anticipating Super Mario Odyssey so much. Of course I'm still going to give this game a shot, but I'm hoping I won't have to try and force myself to like it. I'm still waiting for a release date announcement, though. Or anything new. We haven't heard anything about this game since the reveal trailer all the way back in September.
But with all these people I see complaining that they want a traditional Pikmin game on a handheld, I do have to wonder whether that's even a good idea to try at this time. One guy on YouTube did make a video about this question, and I thought he had good reasonings. But if we do get a Switch Pikmin game, then technically we will have portable Pikmin, lol.
I am willing to accept that this game could very well flop, and my optimism could just be stupid wishful thinking. Sure, I won't be happy if it does, but stuff like that happens. It would just be unfortunate for it to happen to a small franchise, so I'm hoping it turns out well. I've never played Yoshi's New Island, so I can't say anything about that. I just try to not judge a game as good or bad before I even play it, or where we don't have much info.
I got the custom Totoro from a custom amiibo auction at a small Smash Bros. tournament last year. I think I paid like $25 for it, and like an additional $10 for a plastic amiibo display case, which I guess isn't bad. Not a lot of people were placing bids on that one.
I have a friend that (I think) collected all the Smash Bros. amiibos and was able to display them all on one shelf at his house. It was cool. I would think that a new Pikmin game or two would naturally spawn new amiibos. If anything, I would collect them just to have for my small collection of Pikmin stuff. I keep both my out-of-the-box Olimar amiibo and the World of Nintendo Olimar figure (and a yellow Pikmin) on my desk at home. And I just recently placed an order for the Prototype series Olimar figure from the same company.Β
I also have quite a number of games that I've bought or received as gifts that I have yet to even start. They're a bunch of games from multiple platforms, like Wii, Wii U, DS/3DS, and GameCube and PS1/PS2. I'm just so mentally occupied/worn out by college and thinking about my future that I haven't felt like playing video games. So I guess we'll see who starts playing the Switch first, lol.
