and as for the 2 effects, it's really simple...

first the soft, when you have a background layer with your photo, goto Layer -> Duplicate Layer, a new copy of the layer will appear above the original.. now goto Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur, and a value of 6.0 works nicely.. now you'll see the image is blurred like mad.. in the Layer Box, click on the copied layer and above you'll notice (in the top right corner) 100% (i dunno right now if it says opacity, but yea). Thats the opacity for blending that layer with the first one... set it between 40%-55% for nice soft edges

it might sound confusing, but after a few tries, its really simple..

now, for the IR, this is simpler.. first, I'll say that you ONLY get the best results if their is green and blue, and by that i mean, really nice green and blue, it still looks interesting without it though..... anyway..
now that you have your photo open, goto Layer -> New Layer Adjustment (i think its calle that) -> Channel Mixer. click OK to the first box, and now with the options, first set it to monochrome.. than, move the second slider (blue) all the way to +200 (right) and move the 3rd slider (green) to -200 (the left), that'll give you a good idea of what it'll look like.. if it's too dark or too light, just move them a little from the extremes til it looks good.. one thats done, hit OK, and merge down the channel layer with the original, nw to finish it off... add Soft (to make it nicer) and some colour (sepia or light blue works nice)

thatnks a ton, those make total sense. ive gotten pretty good at photoshop in the last couple years, but i still need some guidence with things like that.

ive always liked that soft tone some of your photos have, and ive tried to create that same effect with different layer effects, but it never looked quite right.

and ill definately try out the IR stuff, ive always wanted to play with IR film, but i dont have access to a darkroom here so ive just been doing digital.
