*shrug* understandable. I'll just explain a bit more on it.
despite the current views, there are a number of scientists who beleive that the global warming is due to natural causes. Periodic temperature changes have been recorded throughout geological history, Egypt (and probably the rest of the world) was actually a cooler climate BC (this is evidenced by when they opened the tomb of King Tut in the middle of the dessert canyon valley, cold humid air rushed out of the sealed tomb before quickly drying out to the current climate ... indicating that this remote speck of wasteland was once vegitated and humid), and some have stated that the sun's actually burning brighter at the source of it all.
The other problem is that China's going to be pumping out all sorts of pollutants over the next few years and their country industrializes from a (overall) 3rd world country. The predictions of how much they'll be putting out are just plain scary. Honestly, I doubt they'll listen to environmental warnings given the perpetuation of their secret torture chambers and their continued plans to dam one of their biggest rivers for electricity despite warnings of environmental impact.
The other thing is that if it is solely man-made, and we do clean up our act (which is what we should do anyways given the shorter-term pollution problems), we're talking about the entire planet's climate cooling back to normal. by the time we stop heating it up, the momentum of temperature rising will be far too great to slow down any time soon (like turning off the heat on a boiling pot of water, it keeps boiling long after).
Point is, the worst case scenarios that are predicted as "avoidable", in my opinion, aren't. We WILL end up with shifting bioclimes, massive extinction, and rising ocean levels all accross the globe. And if we content ourself with turning off our pressure on the environment and don't expect the worst to happen, we'll be screwed royally. We need better city planning, researching on how this will effect our growing seasons and learning which plants we'll need to replace the current ones with, continued effort on weaning ourselves off petrol oil, etc. That's what I was trying to get at.
Anyhoo, I was expecting some people to not agree. ... especially touting a conservative envrionmental view on an art site. so yeah, no offense taken.

You sound like Bush, but with intelligence.
Very good points. Apart from the stereotypical view you have on chinese people, forgetting that they too will have to live in this planet, you seem to be well informed.
It just sounds so defeatist. Oh, and Americans are just as deaf regarding pollution as the chinese.

let me reword that ...
(damage that has already been incurred) + (forseeable damage in the near future due to non-cooperating parties) + (residual damages from damage that has already been incurred) > (turn around time for cooperating parties to fully switch to green mode) + (other reconstructive efforts)

I wouldn't say defeatist, just very pessimistic to restore the earth back to where it was before we started screwing it up. We can put on the brakes, that's for sure. But my opinion is we won't be able to put the darn thing into reverse ... I mean, just because we can heat it up doesn't mean we have any means of cooling it back down ... unless you've heard of something I haven't. Anyways, disregarding research for the worst case scenario doesn't sit well with me. ... to me it's like not wanting to plan for security measures until after the first incident.
... that and the entire planet is just as deaf regarding polution as the Americans. it's not like you can find a homeland scapegoat either.

Yeah, I agree that disregarding research for the worst case scenario is a big mistake.
