She flew in like an owl, wings silent on the night air, and landed lightly just inside the alley alongside the building. The great wings flapped sharply a time or two more to shake any stray feathers into place before tucking close to her back. She hissed as the movement made her sore abdomen twinge and carefully felt out the still healing injury. Thankfully, it seemed to have gotten no worse than when she received the blow three hours ago.
After straightening her coat and checking to make sure the grungy street was still empty, she turned and darted further into the alley until she came to the back entrance of the building and knocked twice, then slapped her palm down flat against the beat-up metal door.
A moment passed, before the door cracked open and she caught a glimpse of a single strangely colored eye squinting at her. Then the door was pulled open to reveal the tall forbidding figure of what might have been a man, save for his eyes. Or, to be more specific, eye, singular, neon purple and placed in the exact middle of his face over his broad flat nose. He blinked and grunted at her weary smile, moving to let her pass the threshold. She felt a tingle of magic wash over her, soothing like a warm bath, especially around her stomach. She sighed in relief. She would be safe for now…
