If i understend right (oh, my poor english)
"past in place" is Ctrl+F
it places the copied object exactly on same place from there one was taken..


Masks in Illustrator work a bit different then in PS, in illustrator you can mask an object (any kind - vector or bitmap) but not a layer

PS. if you can show some picture, maybe, it will be more helpfull for me to complitely understen what you need..
