It's some super secret ninja technique of painting!
...Nah, for some of them paintings, I just render a light ball with the lights set up the way I want them to be. The rendered ball provides a simple ref to how light or dark various surface angles may be. It can't do shit for anything that depends on position, though, such as reflections or shadows. So I just use it as a base guide, and work my way up from there.
