Hey guys, I was just introduced to this pic and looks like if we can combine the pic example with real-world hybrid airship research like the Hybrid Air Vehicles Airlander 10, it could fit well in a Dieselpunk genre setting with its retro-futuristic look while looking plausible.

Oddly enough, I'd seen that recently myself in one of the Facebook groups I'm following. Small world.

When coming up with a Dieselpunk sort of "flying battleship", I always try to keep in mind what could be plausible. Even a very large 1,000 foot plus airship could only lift a few 5 inch guns as it's largest armament. Even with that, I would presume such a ship would benefit from lifting rotors to aid in keeping it in the sky. Another example would be that if I would design a ship to have superstructure topside, it would need to be aerodynamic. Any masts would be for radio and signal work, and likely collapsible for docking in a hangar. While I have experimented with flying carriers with flight decks on top, I do find it to be unrealistic compared to the setup USS Akron and Macon had in reality.
Miyazaki's "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" has always been rather inspiring in that respect.

I've been watching for some time, since I love airships and blimps,
and thought I had already joined up.
I shall post my few pics to your blimp collection.

Rule the sky? Probably not, sadly.
There have been many projects over the past thirty years to revive airships in a big way, none have yet to really get anywhere.

will U.S.A. build airship, andΒ Zeppelin?

The-Necromancer In reply to comicfam [2015-03-14 07:53:56 +0000 UTC]
Official Government and Military airship programs have all been cancelled, so it's very unlikely. Igor Pasternak's AEROSCRAFT project had gotten pretty far, but then the ship was damaged beyond repair when a part of the hangar roof fell on it. Pasternak is currently regrouping and planning to rebuild, but it will take time. Goodyear has bought a few Zeppelin NT's from Germany to replace it's blimps, but that is about it lately in America.

The-Necromancer In reply to comicfam [2015-03-20 06:14:09 +0000 UTC]
Any real, proven airships will be in the prototype stages within the next five years. AEROSCRAFT may get rebuilt a little sooner, depends on funding. AirLander in the UK is scheduled for test flights within the year. Goodyear already has the first of it's three Zeppelin NTs operational. No news on whether Zeppelin itself will add to it's fleet, and it's been several years since they've said anything about the NT14 project.
Otherwise, there isn't a whole lot of real development going on lately.
It's been fifteen years since anyone even considered trying to build something the size of Hindenburg or Graf Zeppelin, and that company went bankrupt. Their super-cool giant hangar has been a hotel/resort for the past seven or so years...

I have regrettably had to drop out of the group, I have another commitment and without a premium account I can only be a contributing member of 3 groups so I had to pick one to drop. Since only a tiny portion of my work covers Airships and the steampunk/flight genera I regretfully had to choose this one. I will continue to watch you all, and hopefully in the future I can come back again.Β

Maybe, but I wouldn't count on being able to fly to Europe via Zeppelin anytime soon. Unfortunately, Zeppelin hasn't even gotten to making a prototype for their enlarged NT14 model yet. They announced that concept several years back already...
