Hey Alex,
Β After so long I finally got another mantid! A supply vendor at the local reptile show had about a dozen mantids nymphs for sale. The ghosts were way over priced or I would have gotten one of those as well, but it's okay for the average price with shipping for common mantids I got an L2-L3 giant Shield Mantis. I'm super excited. Haven't seen this species offered anywhere in awhile, in fact, the big mantid breeder I used a lot lost her entire breeding stock of them. It appears male and I need name suggestions.

Thank you!

I've never owned Orchids and each species' needs do vary. I can only give you the basic requirements.

Enclosure should be three times as long as the mantid.
Mist daily.
Molting is very successful using drawer liner.
Don't over-crowd the enclosure (risk of mis-molts).
Don't feed crickets (most mantids can't handle the bad bacteria on them and will vomit before dying).

I'm afraid that's about all I can offer you!

So guess what I'm looking at now for my Pandora setup? A Rhino Rat Snake (look it up it's soo freakin cool). Been looking for my second snake since they require less work and unlike a frog don't have to worry about accidentally getting a croaking male that my husband won't be able to tolerate. Plus I felt a 20high was kind of wasted on a single frog when I can easily get a second hand 10gal for a mossy frog or make a tall plastic bin for one. Anyway Rhino Rats are a 4-5ft arboreal snake that's slender (so like a corn snake). They are bright green (like a grass snake, tree python, etc) with blue between their scales or on their sides, may have some blue on their whitish belly, they usually have some black squiggles, and to top it off they have a horn on their nose that gives them their name sake. More pricey than the frog though. They'll hang out in the open on a branch or curl up under a plant. Mixed remarks on their personalities though. Care sheets say they're docile and rarely strike and the ones all over Youtube keep trying to kill the camera. You can probably like anything train it with patience. If I'm going to get bit I'd rather it be by a colubrid rather than a boa or python (you ever seen the teeth on a Burmease Python? Look up a photo.) and it seems these guys don't hang out long if they grab you plus looks like it's obvious when they'll strike (they open their mouth in strike pose). I'll have to edit my original idea for Pandora but I was already entertaining the idea of adding a foam branch at the top of the custom background and painting it with fluorescent mushrooms. I'll have to add a vine if I get the snake but Pandora had vines and I know a brand that sell ones that look moss covered and really jungley, so it'll look great. Won't add any glow in the dark paint to it probably but maybe paint some plastic moss to hang off it. What do you think. Do you vote the snake or the mossy frog? I would maybe still get a mossy frog in the future for a 10gal or keep 1 in a plastic tub, so I'm not saying the thought of having a mossy frog would totally be dropped.

To top it off they not only eat almost anything (wet cat/dog food, bearded dragon crunchy bites, lizard gel bites, snails/slugs, fruits, veggies and all sorts of bugs) but they are also cheap at $35 a piece and only need a 20gal long. Must be real easy to breed and have lots of babies. You'd think being one of the most colorful skinks that they'd be more expensive. Blue Tounge Skinks are the most popular though because they're bigger and much lazier (they're a sit on your shoulder kind of reptile). I personally don't like the look of the blue tounges and don't want a lizard that big as I'd rather keep a snake in a 40gal+ than waste it on a lizard. I like animals that are more active too. My Leopard Gecko is so lazy. Rather see her out and about so she's doesn't do more than walk up my arm when I take her out, though some of her siblings were really high strung and ran up my shirt or jumped onto the breeder's table.

How is/was Draco as a pet? He handel-able at all or was he really squirmy, really quick, and/or always musked on you? Found someone with the morph garter snakes I like so I'm thinking about getting one. Pricey but not readily available. Found 1 breeder that from the looks of it produces a few each year so I may hold off til another year now that I know where to go to get one and know what their alternative (more common) morph name is (found it in classifieds for the first time knowing the popular term for it).

This t all started because I was add surfing for a possible mate for Muse. Keep finding things from my want list. Looking at a tessera dillute anery (slate blue) corn snake and a few cornXking hybrids (crazy looking animals, wonder what a little fresh blood in Muse's babies will turn out). Seen some babies from a striped snow corn (pretty much pure white to a gray and black half corn half king snake and the babies don't look like they belong to those parents at all. One is bluish with a gray stripe that dissaperes half way down! May get him just cause he cool looking, VERY well priced, and from the sounds of what the breeder says is a calm good feeding snake right like a corn so not showing any of that kingsnake chew on your hand feistiness. The breeder has 2 cool looking females too and just found a well know hybrid breeder with some nice girls. My top pick was sold already of course but they all look pretty neat. What the guy wants for the tessera blue corn snake female I think is a bit high ($250) and the hybrid corns are $125 max that I'm looking at (shipping not calculated in in either figure). The tessera is cool looking. Very spectral looking but she only has 3 genes in her to work with so that with Muse would just give me anery (shades of gray and brown) babies with maybe the possibility of a little pink or lavander wash/tint in 25% of the clutch at best. Muses's breeder said the blue tessera would yield some first generation weird looking babies but I'd have to breed babies back into mom and dad a few generation to see anything really different (this is called line breeding). The girl is just too high for me for what she is.

I thought you knew, I released Draco this Spring. She was exact one foot long. I took a video of me releasing her. Here's the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUBbbk… I was sniffing a lot cause I had major allergies, I wasn't crying, LOL. I released her because over the winter I didn't have much cash and I had too many pets to feed, and I was taking food away from Buddy (Beardie) to feed Draco and I didn't think that was fair so I released her since she was wild caught anyways.
Draco was handle-able yes. She liked the warmth of my hand. And she would curl around my fingers to get a good grip. She never really tried to escape, like fall to the ground. He didn't really musk either.
That baby sounds cool! Interesting colors. And if he's well priced that's always nice, lol.

Oh, I didn't know you released Draco but I had a suspicion since there hasn't been any new photos of her in awhile.

Not getting the "blue" tessera corn. She seems too high priced compared to other just as cool options. Plus I looked up the sellers reviews and he's got really bad marks. Sent many people skinny snakes and some even had infections. Didn't up hold his end of loan deals. Not comfortable spending $250 on an animal from someone like that. Seems in all the guy doesn't feed his animals enough at best. Seems too risky of a purchase. Definitely buying a hybrid or a species I can cross with Muse. Just gotta find the right one. The breeder says he's got some inventory to list on the for sale page yet and some coming as soon as he's got them switched to frozen/thawed. Told him what I like. He sent me a photo of one he'd part with that has pretty pattern but I'm hoping he finds me a bright colored one he'll part with.

Oh that's not good at all. That's horrible! Who would do that to a poor animal? And then ship it off in such a state? I wouldn't feel comfortable spending that much either, not for someone like that. It's obvious that he cares more about making a buck than the actual animals and his customers. I hate that. I've dealt with someone similar. It's really irritating. That'd be great if you bred Muse! Awesome. I'd love to see those babies. The whole process I'd be interested in seeing. The mating, the laying of the eggs, the hatching, the babies. Lol.

What's worse is the guy raised the price on the female. Not one he cares if he ends up stuck with because it doesn't sell I guess. Still, not worth it especially with his track record. Looking into a hybrid female from a breeder Muse's breeder recommended and I'm also looking into a Poppycorn's female (she makes bright ass high quality snakes that Muses's breeder loves). Combine an F2 genenration JMG with a Poppycorn snake and there will be some crazy colored babies born.

You won't believe it, I actually held the spider! Me who is com-pulsed to squish everyone I find in my house. So the spider now has a name too because it's a real pet and I can stick my hand in his cage for maintenance without being grossed out. The handling went pretty well. The little fella is skittish but doesn't just dart away often. Jumped onto the floor a few times but he's okay climbing on my hand usually if I put it in front of him. Know anything about spider body language? He mad me nervous the way he was acting last handling so if I understand him better I'll be calmer around him. He would raise his front legs and wave them around while backing up or being darty like he was mad for some reason. Though I've also seen him reach out for things with his front legs like a mantis does like he's saying "I want there" and he's testing how far it would be to jump.

Oh wow! Awesome! Congrats!

So what is the little one's name then?

I think that spiders raise their arms for a few reasons.

When it's defensive, they usually raise them very high, spread their fangs, and lean back so almost their entire belly is showing. And they will stay still.

When they just want something, they just raise their arms slightly, but the rest of their body is regular, then they will jump.

And sometimes it's just an instant reaction, like when someone throws something at you and you're not expecting it, you kind of raise your arms, like, aah is it gonna hit me? Might be surprised by a sudden movement and is trying to shield himself.

Think you noticed already that I named him Brenard. It's one of my favorite pet names so it'll help me think of him more fondly I think.

He was skittish last time I had him out. More sensitive to movement than first time so he so did not like the camera. He was like "Darn paparazzi." Could've been high loud the TV was or the fact that Bear wanted to investigate. He jumped on the floor a few times but usually would crawl back on my hand if I set it in front of him. Did notice him reach for things like he was too lazy to jump. Seen him do it in the cage too.

She seemed to be happy up until that point though. She was such an awesome pet, I'd never seen or owned one before so it really was a pleasure. Thanks for sending her to me!

Haha he's like, I'm trying to live my life here, stop it with the cameras!! LOL. Swixter my tarantula gave me the middle leg (a variation of the middle finger) last time I was taking photos! How rude!
