So I bought the first season of D.Gray-Man's anime and I've got a mixed opinion on the voice acting.
On one hand, Japanese Allen is murder on my ears. Why does he sound nine when he's fifteen? I wouldn't care so much if he weren't the MAIN CHARACTER and all. Lots of points taken off there. And the first Level 2 has a laugh that just bothers me. I've only seen the first few episodes but I'm a bit put off. I hope that Allen's voice matures a bit because there is no way that he's still fifteen by the time the Level 4 attacks headquarters. Or even before then.
And then there's the English dub. Allen sounds about his age, and it's not a stereotypical hero voice, so I'm happy there. The Millennium Earl, however, is not quite right. See, he's always talking with hearts. Because of that, I expect a friendly voice- perhaps tinged with malice, but a kindly middle-aged gentleman's voice is what is appropriate. He just sounds too obviously nasty to capture the creepiness that he needs. And too old. I know that he -is- old, but...
But that would not have bothered me.
AND THEN KANDA.
It's not that his voice is bad, but dammit! It's way, way too gruff! I don't care if he's the loner guy and they always have deep monotones (because if it's not deep, then you must be a robot/brainwashed -_-). When I listen, he seems about thirty, not...seventeen or whatever. His voice just completely jars with his appearance is such a way that is not good, even slightly. 0/10 for him >:I >:I
So I guess they're about equal- but if they fuck up Lavi then that's it. Unless Road/Krory/Miranda are super freakin' badass.

Overall, my opinion of the voice acting is upsetting. After buying/seeing the first couple episodes of Black Butler, and then watching D. Gray Man again, I realized how messed up the English voices are for their Japanese counterparts :/ But as a side note, I can start hating you now, for getting the anime before me |:<
At first, when I first heard Allen's voice, I got mad. It sounded really off and too - what's the word? - guy-ish. Horrible way to phrase my meaning but yeah. I'm getting used to it, but I doubt I'll ever recover from the mental scarring. Same issue with the Millennium Earl, so I agree with you. Way too deep voice o_o

I like Allen's English voice. Honestly, it's not totally what I had in mind, but I would not have been pleased if it had been -I dunno- the guy who was Robin in Teen Titans. THAT would be so unfitting that I would just hsbfajf NO. His voice now sounds kinda formal and polite, like he's supposed to! He never struck me as being girly at all (except in the zombie chapter with the ponytail AND SEDUCED A ROBOT). I realised what the main problem is with the Earl's voice! He sounds...Texan! And that will not do. At all.
KANDA CAN DIE I tolerated him until he met Alma AND UH HE DIED. Then I guess he's okay. But his voice seriously does not work for him. It's more suited for Cross, and the guy who adopted Road could have Cross' former voice. PERFECT
I don't know! Let's find out quickly...

Miranda is...okay? Maybe once she appears as part of the Black Order, it'll be better. The few times she isn't bawling her eyes out are fine.
I guess Road is fitting. Not great, but it suits her enough.

I just don't believe it fits his character. It's too fluffy, almost. The voice is the same guy who did Death the Kid in Soul Eater, and that bothers me a lot. I keep thinking it's the wrong character |: Hey! That ponytail was sexy! DON'T KNOCK ON IT lol. And I think you're right about the Earl. They better fix that, someway somehow. Or else there shall be rebellion! D:<

YES HE CAN I just don't like Kanda very much. It's sad that even the villains are well-adjusted compared to him. Cross is pretty pimp but Kanda's voice could go to him easily.
I KNOW I haven't heard Lavi's yet. If it's not good, then I'll join you in angry music-playing. But it'll be a different song.
