Having read your bio about your plans to develop using digital art, may I share with you my own experiences so far. Sitting in front of Photoshop with loads of custom brushes, filters and layers I found initially daunting and following on from just down right frustrating. It always seemed to take ages to produce the line or brush work that always felt natural with a pencil or traditional brush. Plus there are vast examples of great work all over the internet which leave you sitting there scratching your head thinking how do you get from a blank screen to that.
To start with, try and produce a series of paintings using your preferred piece of software around a theme or idea that excites or really inspires you. Doesn't matter what it is, clouds, portraits, space ships or just interesting shapes. But focus on a subject you like first whilst you get the hang of the software. There is no point on painting a subject you don't feel much value in and at the same time pressure yourself into learning and improving. When your confidence and understanding grows, break out into different subjects.
Try not to use to many photos first or textures, its useful and can create brilliant effects in work, but its more beneficial to learn to render objects and textures first using your own mark making. I found that really helped me.
Layers....for years I worked on one layer because I just didn't understand what was going on with them. I use them now because they do help save time, but initially its worth working on one layer. It forces you to come up with solutions if you spot a mistake or wish to change an element of your work, just the same as if you were working on a canvas or piece of paper.
Practice, its the standard thing people will say to anyone, but its true. Try and produce a piece of work on a regular schedule. They certainly don't have to be finished pieces, some can be colour experiments, or fleshed out sketch ideas. But the more you do this the more natural the process will become.
Lastly, do this if you love the process and enjoy it, it should never feel like a chore. But if you are passionate about this which you write like you are, then I think you will be pleasantly surprised with where this takes you.
