So, it seems that the English Bayonetta demo is now available for download. The next time you have access to a 360, I would highly suggest taking advantage of this.

This is the part of the day where I have mixed feelings. Apparently they're planning to remake Lufia II, one of my favorite SNES RPGs, as an action RPG for the DS:

[link]

Don't let the Squeenix tag fool you; the original game was actually made by an entirely different company that Square happened to acquire when it decided to buy out a bunch of competition. It was a pretty sweet game, too, with plenty of interesting characters and plot points. Plus, the game was basically a mix of Zelda and standard RPGs in that you had a bunch of cool tools that you used to solve puzzles in dungeons, but you also had the traditional turn-based battles (though with Item Points as a twist). It was a lot of fun.

So I'm happy to see it remade, and the whole "action RPG" thing could well be the modern twist it needs, so long as they keep the old Zelda-style puzzles intact.

What bothers me is the Squeenixification. I appreciate the fact that they want to update the characters' appearances, but there are certain things I would've liked them to keep, such as the fact that Maxim actually had his hair slicked back in the original: [link] ...Or more prominently, I really wish they would've let Serena/Selan keep her huge, Lyndis-style ponytail. There just aren't enough of those.

So yeah, it's a game I'll be looking out for. If it doesn't turn out so hot, though, at least I still have my old SNES copy.

DO WANT. If anything can imitate Zelda right, it's Lufia.

I never played Lufia II, but my brother is a huge fan of that game. The puzzles looked fun, but the battles looked awfully dull. (Or rather, just as exciting as a Dragon Quest battle without Akira Toriyama's artwork. Just as exciting as an FF3 battle without the job system. ) This solves the problem of battles, and getting your train of thought interrupted by random encounters.

I think Maxim's new design is actually pretty badass. It's actually for the better his hair isn't perfectly slicked back, otherwise he'd look like a The Outsiders reject.

In other news, I just got a PSP yesterday. I've been playing the MMX remake on that and it's a blast. The best part is the voice acting. At one point Vile actually says, "NO! Not a CHARGE SHOT!"

So, I went into a game of Team Fortress 2 last night in a very laid-back server. I started running toward the mission objective, and I noticed an awful lot of arrows flying around. When I got closer, I found that the entire enemy team was made up of Snipers equipped with bows and arrows. As I got closer, someone on the Sniper team yelled "OUR ARROWS WILL BLOT OUT THE SUN!"

This is why I play these games.

Turning on my PS3 made me remember that I have access to a walkthrough on making a Japanese XBox Live account, provided that you've used fewer than three free months of Gold membership. You could potentially make a Japanese 360 account, get a free month of Gold membership, and use that to download the Bayonetta demo if you feel so inclined.

I believe making a Japanese 360 account is harder than making a Japanese PSN account, but the 360 version of Bayonetta is better than the PS3 version, so it's a tradeoff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blanke In reply to Draslushee [2009-10-28 13:44:58 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like a lot of trouble for just a demo... I have enough to keep me busy until it comes out, what with Metroid Prime Trilogy and Castle Crashers right now. That and Caslevania Rebirth, Excitebike and New Super Mario Bros are all coming up, too.

You're lucky. The Japanese PS3 version of Bayonetta is not only region-free, but 100% English. [link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Draslushee In reply to Blanke [2009-10-28 23:00:01 +0000 UTC]

The article is somewhat misleading. While the Japanese PS3 version of Bayonetta IS in English, the fact that they're only mentioning the PS3 version implies that the 360 version is not in English.

The game itself is, in fact, done pretty much completely in English anyway. They only exclude the 360 version because 360 games are region-locked, whereas the PS3 is typically region-free.

In an ironic twist of fate, it was the 360 version of the Japanese Bayonetta demo that was more English-y. All the menus in the PS3 demo were written in Japanese, while the 360 version had full English menus.

Yeah, I figured it'd be the same language for both games, but leading computer companies are generally control freaks.

I wasn't surprised that it'd be 100% English, considering God Hand was, too.

So how does the weapons system work? I know there's guns obviously, and I saw some screens with a giant battle axe, so I'm assuming it'll have the same variety as any old DMC. But can you switch on the fly?

More importantly, are there any easily abusable tricks for maxing out your "style meter?" I must know.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Draslushee In reply to Blanke [2009-10-10 03:15:20 +0000 UTC]

Short version:

- You switch between sets of weapons, sort of like Dante switching his sword and gun simultaneously, except they're hand and foot slots

- You can pick up weapons from fallen enemies

- There might be easily-abusable tricks, but I can't tell because OMIGAWD SO MANY COMBOS

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blanke In reply to Draslushee [2009-10-10 23:05:35 +0000 UTC]

All right, Godhand-style weapons. Yay.

By "style meter" I was referring to how Bayonetta's clothes (supposedly) diminish as you fight better. I that's the case, I'd have even better reason to abuse tricks like DMC3's Spiral spam. (You can cancel out its lag by switching to your other gun. Equip E&I as your other gun, mash L2 and O, and watch your style meter skyrocket. )

The weapon switch system sounds perfect though. I like the sound of how you get the option to go pure melee or pure guns.

Now what I'd really like to see is a game with a DMC-style arsenal, but God Hand-style customizable combos. Imagine even just 3 weapons with about a hundred moves each to choose from for your moveset.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Draslushee In reply to Blanke [2009-10-10 23:54:26 +0000 UTC]

I don't think Bayonetta's clothes necessarily diminish as you fight better. Rather, they tend to disappear momentarily as you either go into a long combo or finish up a combo with a strong attack, usually by means of putting a pause before the last button push in the combo. That usually causes her to summon a massive hair-fist or hair-foot to smash the enemies, and since her hair fuels that, she naturally becomes less clothed.

No customizable combos a la Godhand, but believe me, there are plenty enough combos to come close to a Godhand-style number of combos.
