Yo! Pete.  Finally followed your lead and ordered Clip Studio Paint (EX). Up to now I've been using various versions of PS - mostly CS2.  I've gotten the hang of using pen selections with group layer masks for containing the rendering.  Works better than a basic clipping mask, especially with large number of layers.  Can I still do that in Clip Studio Paint?  Or is it just clipping masks?

Any pointers or recommendations?  Any websites out there that you like or would recommend for getting instruction with this program?

Right on.  II'm not sure, I haven't really done much with clipping masks

Hey, Pete.  You really sold me on Manga Studio 5, so I did some research.  It's now called Clip Studio Paint Pro.  It's $48 if bought directly from Smithmicro, but, Amazon sells it for $35. Sounds great, until you discover that all the cool features and upgrades (painting etc.,) aren't included.  You have to buy the extended (EX) version to get them.  Okay - so how much is that one? It's $210.

I was ready to buy it, but that new price tag put me off. It's a big difference.  I'm sure it's well worth it, but that marketing tap dance rubbed me the wrong way. It's a little too close to bait-and-switch.  I'm just going to brood over it a bit.

(Meanwhile, I getting down with group folders and clipping masks, learning to use layers and digital techniques to advantage.

P.S.  Here is something I posted in this week's journal that i though you would appreciate.  If the link doesn't work, you can always view it on my profile page.  youtu.be/kbZHnTVOAYg  ;

Sorry to hear that everything changed. Back when I picked up Manga Studio 5 it was the same as clip studio and came with the ability to paint and everything for $25 on amazon. Good to know your still giving it a shot, I tried to check out your work but, the link in the post doesn't seem to work.

Don't know what happened to the link, but it doesn't work for me, now, either.  In any event, it's the video demo that opens this journal  Turn the ScrewAlla Prima!
I seized on this video because it reminded me of the thumbnail painting component of the daily exercise.  I don't do it anywhere as quickly and efficiently as this, but this is my idea for how it should go - and, if I have anything to say about it, how it will go in the not too distant future.
For those who bitch that five minutes is not enough time to sketch the figure in line, here's a wake-up call.  Both the gesture and lay-in are done leisurely with utter efficiency in about 30 seconds.  Then painting begins. The video is about three and a half minutes.  Accounting for when the work starts and finishes on the timeline and that the second half of the video is sped up a bit, we estimate that the figure is completed in about five minutes. Even if you double that to ten, it's still what you'd be doing practicing at websites like New Masters Academy and Croquis Cafe.*  Imagine how much faster it would be if it were done digitally! - It's not my work, but that of someone who knows what he's doing!  It's short.

Right on, I did some looking and it turns out that all the basic stuff that comes with the regular manga studio comes with clip studio. I currently use the basic version of manga studio 5 for my artwork and haven't really found a need for the extra "comic creation" stuff that comes with EX.

Sol-Caninus In reply to BornTewSlow [2016-05-19 19:50:56 +0000 UTC]

I figured as much from studying the smithmicro product descriptions and videos. And I would have snatched up the basic version if they didn't put it right next to the extended version.  it's like - "hey fool! Look at what you miss out on if get the basic version."  Grrrr.  Makes me want to go to thepiratebay.com and pick it up for free.  But doing that could end up costing more for virus and malware removal than buying a legit copy .   At $210 EX is still only 1/5 the price of CS. so, . . .  I'll wait, for now.  Mostly because it would help to justify the expense, whether it's 40 bucks or 210, by improving my ability. I'll keep practicing with CS2 until I can't take it anymore (which probably won't be long).

Basic version is probably how I'll go.  Thanks!
