I don't really dwell much on numbers of pageviews or favourites. Tastes differ, and people maybe don't take time to comment on things as much as they used to. I'm just happy when somebody likes my stuff enough to let me know

Hei,

Sorry to bother you AGAIN (LOL! )
I've been looking through your stuff once more and came across this again:

:thumb341226057:

How did you make these charms? Is it the same material as the Loki jewellery pieces? Because the surface looks totally different, so I was wondering if it was something else?
I'm really tempted to get started on making things like this myself.
I mean, the possibilities seam endless once you know how to do it.

But I have no idea yet! Please help!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosNDisaster In reply to Suomi-Girl [2013-04-22 09:10:25 +0000 UTC]

You crazy woman, I don't mind the questions. You could actually e-mail me, that might be easier.

I take it this is referring to the Avengers bracelet I made a while ago? The thumb isn't linking anywhere and I'M too lazy to look up and compare the numbers.
Yes, that's the same material as the Loki stuff, baking plastic called "Shrinky Dinks" (what a ridiculous name, I know.)... you can make anything with it, it's quite lovely. The surface of the helmet ring and brooch look different because it's been gently sanded before painting, which gives it that roughed-up textured look. Normally the shrinky stuff has a smooth surface.

Any more questions? Shoot away.

Oh, here's the next question already!
The holes in the charms, you know, for attaching them to rings or chains or whatever else.
How do you drill them?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosNDisaster In reply to Suomi-Girl [2013-04-22 13:39:57 +0000 UTC]

No drilling...
you just punch them in the right places with a paper pierces before baking the sheets
(Yes, that can be quite annoying when you forget about the holes pre-shrinking... happened more often than I care to remember, because I'm sloppy and clumsy LOL)

Hey, thanks for the info about the plushies!
I was wondering if you maybe have some instruction sheets available for making them, like patterns or guides? I decided I want to try making some myself, for friends (and also for myself of course), but I must admit I have no idea qhere to start. Apart from Loki, I especially loved your Iron Man and Captain America, and if you could send me any tips or help I'd be very happy

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosNDisaster In reply to Suomi-Girl [2013-04-17 16:32:37 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... I'm afraid I have no good news for you. I don't have any patterns or tutorials.
I swear I was going to make some. Before I started I planned to actually document every step with pictures and write a step-by-step "log"... not so much for others but more for myself so I'd be able to retrace my own steps and reproduce anything in case I needed to. I didn't think anyone else would be interested in it, to be honest :')
But then I sort of got lost in the process of creation, and simply forgot to take photos or write down measurements and instructions. In hindsight, it was stupid, because I could have saved myself a lot of work if I had documented it properly the very first time... but well... I didn't.

Suomi-Girl In reply to ChaosNDisaster [2013-04-17 16:39:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh I see, that's a pity but don't worry it's fine. I understand how that would happen. I often get completely lost in work and only when I'm done I realize that I had wanted to do things differently or write something down.
It would be great if you could just give me some basic measurements, if it's not too much work, I don't want to annoy you, just how big the plushies are and how they are shaped (roughly) on the sheets. Also, how much stuffing do you put in so they're neither too stiff now too soft? Did it take a lot of experimenting until you had the right amoung of filling?
Are the clothes sewn or glued? I've been wondering that because I can't see any seams on your pictures. If glued, what kind of glue did you use? How long does it take to dry? Sorry if these are a lot of questions, but I never did anything like this!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ChaosNDisaster In reply to Suomi-Girl [2013-04-17 16:59:28 +0000 UTC]

Let me try to answer your questions (and forgive me for doing it here, I'm too lazy to switch to notes at this point):

It's really not that difficult. I was very doubtful at first but then realized that it was actually fairly simple once I had worked out a procedure to follow. The shapes on the felt look a little like gingerbread men.

1) draw pattern on felt (body and head are made separately and then sewn together) - 2) sew 2 layers together but leave opening to stuff the filling in - 3) cut out - 4) reverse - 5) stuff - 6) close holes - and you're more or less done with the basic figure.

I never really thought about how much stuffing goes in. You just... stop when it feels right. Some of my plushies are softer, others more stiff, there really is no "right amount".

The clothes are mostly sewn, but the small parts are clued on, like faces, hair, and various smaller ornaments. I started using super glue, but that turned out to be rather annoying to work with, so I later switched to crafting glue that was crystal clear so you don't see any spills on the felt (because at times, it can get quite messy LOL).
In some cases, I didn't even make them real shoes, but just painted the "feet" with black marker (Coulson, Widow, Fury).

Any more questions? Feel free to ask, I don't mind sharing my experiences. I'll try to draw basic patterns and measure them for you, ok?

That would be fantastic, thank you so much in advance!
I'd also love to know how you made the jewellery one day. Or would you consider taking commissions for that? You know, the gold coloured Loki helmet designs you made, the ring and necklace?

ChaosNDisaster In reply to Suomi-Girl [2013-04-18 17:28:14 +0000 UTC]

I hate to disappoint you, but I really don't think I have the time or nerve at the moment to start remaking these things. I'm really sorry... but it's totally easy to make, just get yourself some shrinking plastic sheets, print the shapes, cut them out and bake them - then add some paint and do whatever you want with the results ;')
