Once upon a time, there was a young boy named Dante, who lived on a farm. Everyone had a farm, so his family was not that different, but for one thing. They were quite poor, and did not have money for much more than food.

Pg 2

Although Dante did not ask for much, there was one thing that he really wanted: a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful horse. The reason he wanted a horse was since every day, he would go to school to find that his friends were comparing their horses, and he felt left out. When they asked if he wanted to race with them, he had to refuse, because he did not have a horse, which made him feel left out.

Though his Mother and Father were very poor, they noticed that he wanted a horse, and were slowly saving up for his birthday gift. Every day, when he came home from school, his mother would ask him how his day was, and when he glumly replied ‘Fine,’ she felt a bit of guilt for her son.

A few weeks later, on his birthday, Dante was in high spirits. Why, you ask? Because it was none other than his birthday, and his friends had let him ride their horses! When he got hom, he found to his delight, that his mother had baked him his favorite strawberry cake, with freshly-picked strawberries!!

While the boy and his mother were feasting on the cake, Dante’s father walked into the room, and told his son ‘Dante, my boy, I have a surprise for you!’ When his father started to lead him outside, Dante started to wonder what his father had gotten him.

When Dante saw a grey horse, he was suddenly overwhelmed, and ran to hug her.
‘I’m going to name you Dawn,’ he whispered in her ear.
She whinnied excitedly.
Since it was the weekend, Dante had plenty of time to bond with Dawn, and treated her like rare diamonds. He took her around the neighborhood, and also showed her the crops. His father even taught him how to wash her.

On Monday, when he was riding her to school, Dante felt proud to finally own a horse. But when he got to school, all of his friends crowded around, and started to tease him about his horse.
‘Look at her coat! It’s so filthy and disgusting!’
‘No, no! Look at her hooves! They have no shine to them!
‘No, if you want to look at something, look at the tail! It’s so tangled, and dirty!’
When Dante saw his horse from these angles, he saw that his ‘beautiful’ horse was not so beautiful after all.

When Dante got home that day, he was quite sad, and that sadness quickly turned to anger. Dante suddenly directed his anger at Dawn. He found some old bread in a corner, and started to throw it at the horse, and insulted her as well. As Dawn neighed furiously at this outburst, Dante let her pain, and fear fuel his anger.

That night, when Dante was about to fall asleep, he looked out the window at Dawn, and saw her sound asleep, with bits of food stuck to her. He felt bad, but then felt angry for feeling bad.
‘She’s the one who’s ugly, and dirty, and she embarrassed me! Why should I care?’ he thought.
When he finally fell asleep, he dreamt of his friends laughing and teasing him and then finally growing giant, and squishing him.

The next day at school, he was staring out the window at a patch of lilies and was thinking about Dawn, when something the teacher said caught his attention.
‘….so, when you treat any living thing badly, even the smallest fly, you have hurt its feelings, which can cause them to die. If you don’t apologize, or at least feel sorry for it in the slightest, you will suffer the pain, and regrets for the rest of your life.’
When he was about to ask what regrets meant, the teacher answered it herself.
‘Regret means to feel sorry, disappointed, or distressed about.’ She was reading out of a dictionary.
When Dante thought about what he had done to Dawn, he felt all three of those things and some more.

By the time he got home that night, he had forgotten all about what he had learned that morning at school. After he finished his homework, he ate dinner and fell fast asleep.
While he slept, Dante dreamt about everything the teacher had told him and then shot up in bed, still unable to remember what the teacher had told him.

The next day while staring at the same patch of lilies, he remembered what the teacher had told him about regretfulness. Dante even wrote it down for good measure. Then, when he went home, he ran to Dawn’s stable, and suddenly hugged her like he did that first day, when he got her. He whispered, almost silently, in her ear. ‘I’m sorry.’ Simple as that. He kept on thinking it, too, just to make sure it worked.

And it did. Dawn was back to her regular happy self, and even Dante felt that a large weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He smiled, for the first time in days, and finally felt that whatever anyone else said, this was his horse, his beautiful horse. When he went back inside, he laughed, finished his homework, and then fell asleep smiling.

In the morning, when he was about to go to school, he ran out to Dawn and rode her to school. When his friends started to crowd around to jeer at him again, he just ignored them and rode through the crowd like royalty. When he got into class, he didn’t notice the glow that was coming from Dawn, who was in the stables in the schoolyard.

The second he got out of class, he went to the stables, and could not find Dawn. His first thought was that someone had stolen her, but then thought better of it, and realized that there was a white glowing coming from his horse’s stable. When he went over, he saw a horse that looked distinctly like Dawn, but in no way was she Dawn. She had a gleaming white coat that seemed to glow; she had beautiful white hooves that shined at the slightest movement; when she opened her eyes, Dante was shocked. She had the same eyes as Dawn, and when she saw him, the look-a-like neighed just like dawn. He had no doubt; it was Dawn. He climbed on her back, and then noticed the huge wings, that blended in with the purest moonlight. She extended those large wings, and they flew off into the sunlight. With all the evil friends staring after them.

Kun hän pääsi kotiin, Dante oli unohtanut jo kaiken mitä koulussa oppi. Saatuaan läksynsä tehtyä, hän söi ja nukahti. Nukkuessaan Dante näki unta kaikesta mitä opettaja oli hänelle opettanut. Hän heräsi, mutta ei muistanut vieläkään opetuksia.

Seuraavana päivänä kun hän tuijotti sitä samaista liljapenkkiä, hän muisti kaiken mitä opettaja oli hänelle opettanut katumuksesta. Dante kirjoitti sen muistiin ettei unohtaisi. Sitten hän meni kotiin, juoksi Dawnin karsinaan, halasi häntä ja kuiskasi hänen korvaansa 'Olen pahoillani.' Niin yksinkertaista kuin se olikin. Hän myös ajatteli sitä(katumusta) että se varmasti toimisi.

Ja niin se toimikin. Dawn oli taas tavallinen iloinen itsensä, ja Dantestakin tuntui kuin iso taakka oli nostettu pois hänen harteiltaan. Hän hymyili ensimmäistä kertaa päiviin, ja hänestä vihdoinkin tuntui siltä että mitä tahansa joku sanoisi, tämä oli hänen hevosensa, hänen kaunis hevosensa. Kun hän meni takaisin sisään, hän nauroi, teki kotitehtävänsä ja nukahti hymysuin.

Aamulla, kun hän oli lähdössä kouluun, Dante juoksi Dawnin luo ja ratsasti hänellä kouluun. Hevonen levitti nuo valtavat siivensä, ja he lensivät auringonpaisteeseen, kaikkien ilkeiden ystävien katsoessa heidän peräänsä.
