hey, in photoshop/illustrator/Gimp What are paths? I clicked on it thinking it was a pen then these weird selecting lines showed up on the screen and I cant figure out what I'm supposed to do with them...

please help

been a while since ive been on here so you've probably figured it out already but, making a path in photoshop allows you to select a certain area you want to edit, but dont want it to affect the rest of the picture.

Like if I wanted to change someones eye color. I would create a path around the eye, select that path, then change the eye color.
