I haven't seen most of the sources you draw from, but I think that you may be right. You have a lot of talent in doing that (I have trouble unless it is in black and white or greyscale- colour throws me off)

I'm thinking about subscribing to deviantart. i dunno if i'm gonna go through with it right now, but its in the back of my mind. it seems that all the people who are popular have it on, which leads me to think that DA promotes your shit or something along those lines... 4 bucks a month sounds kinda wack thoughhhh...
