I found something out. You know those play mat/under carpet pads? The kind that go together like a jigsaw puzzle? Well if you need a cheap cosplay with armor that's gonna be painted, those can be an ideal material. :I

Interesting! I'll have to keep that in mind, thanks :3

You just have to paint them and keep the textured side facing in. I learned this browsing costume forums xD

Hey~~~~

So I had an idea to make a Borgia (Brotherhood) Leader costume. Make some things by hand, buy a few other minor things (gloves, boots), And hand paint the armor. Any tips with any of this?

What material were you planning to use to make the armor?

My favorite paints for making armor look shiny is either liquid leaf or rub 'n' buff, depending on the material. Most arts and crafts stores will have these. If you plan on doing a resin cast for the armor, you can by chrome from an auto store and get an awesome shine, but it is more expensive.

I was thinking of taking your earlier advice and using craft foam. I looked at some walkthroughs and other instructions on how to use craft foam and it seems to be durable enough.

I was thinking of taking a metal glossy spray paint and coating the pieces then hand painting the scrollwork over it.

As far as resin cast goes... I'll keep it in mind for later projects. This one I need for November next year (RenFest!) and I'm working on a costume for a Hetalia fanchar of mine for MechaCon this summer that's gonna eat up my money.

I would do a test spray on the craft foam with the spray paint, because it may be more acidic and eat through it.

Depending on how thick you want the scrollwork to be, you could use metallic paint pens (which is what I used on this: [link] ). To be honest, a good sharpie would work too after the initial coat of paint (to be sure it wouldn't bleed), so long as you don't press too hard and dent the craft foam.

If you're going to do any sort of helm, invest in one of the styrofoam heads you can get at a lot of beauty supply stores. It's perfect to stick pins into to put the pieces together, and you can mold the craft foam on top of it without using your own head.

I didn't think about that, thank you kindly.

Paint pans may work. I'll still have to paint the black parts in, but otherwise it should work. Molto grazie~

My pleasure ^^ Acrylic paint also works fine, though you have to brush that on. That's what I used for the black part of the helm. I've also used black shoe polish on top of silver paint to do a bit of weathering.

Like on this: [link] It was silver liquid leaf on the resin cast, then black shoe polish to weather it and make the cracks 'dingy' (just rub it in with an old t-shirt), and then some silver rub 'n' buff to give a few lighter, shinier patches.

I'll definitely think about that. The shoe polish idea sounds interesting... Was it neutral, black, or parade gloss?

Any tips for the eyeholes in the mask part of the helm?

Estomayka In reply to CommissarFox [2011-12-18 04:04:20 +0000 UTC]

I used black for that, but you can play with a couple different ones if you like to see what effect you like best. If you can find shoe polish cream instead of the harder stuff, it works better to get into the cracks.

Eyeholes are hard. When we did the doctor's mask, we just cut them out of the craft foam, but it was a quick costume we were doing and I wasn't real satisfied with the way they looked. Best I can say is experiment and see what you like best.

CommissarFox In reply to Estomayka [2011-12-18 04:06:41 +0000 UTC]

Alright.

In game, the eyeholes in the helmets seem to follow the eye contours. I only worry about field of vision, honestly...

Estomayka In reply to CommissarFox [2011-12-18 14:45:46 +0000 UTC]

Hoods make it hard to see, too XD Trust me, we're used to going to conventions with limited fields of vision. It's good to go with a buddy who CAN see freely, just in case.

Also, don't be afraid to fake it or change it. Especially with a character like that, no one is going to be holding an in-game picture against you to compare it, and pointing out how the eye holes are wrong. Sometimes you have to be practical instead of trying to match video game physics.

Oh I know that much. I've peaked a white hoodie I own assassin style, and with the hood up I run into walls left and right xD

I was actually thinking on trying to keep it. I personally like the style, as it's very... well... Renaissance, but it just seems a little complicated.

Estomayka In reply to CommissarFox [2011-12-18 16:25:36 +0000 UTC]

Renaissance is complicated as hell, as a general rule. I can't wait to see in progress pictures of it when you get started!

CommissarFox In reply to Estomayka [2011-12-18 16:38:06 +0000 UTC]

When I get my new hoodie peaked and I get the emblem on it, I'll put pictures of that up too~

But as far as the someone who can see, I'm going to be either going with a friend of mine who's part of my local Assassin Brotherhood with me, dressed as a militia, or with a different friend of mine who we're gonna dress as Cesare.

Assassin's Creed has forever made history epic: today we talked about the Renaissence in history... I had visions of Leo and Ezio dancing through my head. I was so enthused, I even did a little doodle to commemorate the event next to my notes about art and patronage.
Leo was a well paid little painter.

If either you or your Altair has pictures of us, could you link us to them? <3 We're collecting, trying to find some goods ones for the club and cosplay.com, since we have very few on our own cameras.

^__^ I'll talk to Altair about it-- she's the one with all the pictures. She said she was going to work on them tomorrow (Or rather, later on today, since it's 2 AM).

I go through my favourites and I find this [link] piece you've done a while back. Then I come to see your gallery and see AC art I've recently faved/commented on, possibly here or Y! Gal'. Where's my brain you may ask? It's absent.
