If your final aim is a 3D appearance then it's the right direction but it takes a lot of practice! Else it just looks like colour stains...
Personaly I prefer my coloured lines method but that's just me.

It can be done, but I recommend A LOT of sketchwork before making the main piece because it's a mess if you have no guidelines or reference.

I DID make a sketch and lines before I put down the colours. This is my second attempt at this style.

Try to work with dark backgrounds, it makes the job easier when you attempt to have no lines and looks better too.
