Hi! I love your artwork! I'm sorta new but extremely interested in RA, the Hobbit/LOTR, and horse (oh and dragons) But you don't need my life story, just any tips on drawing people on horseback?

First off welcome! Glad to have you here on DA! RA/hobbit/LOTR/horses/dragons are good things to be interested in 
So tips on drawing people on horseback? Well the first ingredient this I found worked for me was to have an idea of the anatomy of both separately. Then when I combined them I could better understand how they would fit together. And it is not just the skeletal anatomy (which I never found to help me at all because I never draw skeletons) the muscle and tendons and how they act with the skin (because that is physically what we see when we look at them) and then how they move, where their balance points are, center of gravity etc.
For me horses have come a little easier as I own a horse and lease another so I work with them almost every day so if I am struggling with any part of them physically, I just go to the barn and examine them close up and feel with my hands the tendons and muscles. However this does not work for many people as they donβt own a horse. There are many other ways to see the many aspects of the horse. Google images and DeviantArt for images. Google you can get more scientific photos of the parts of the horse. YouTube has many videos of horses moving as well as people riding horses. Drawing from a photo rather than real life is a lot more helpful to me because the photo is already 2D and cannot move (real horses are not great as posing.)Β Β
The main thing to remember is to relax when drawing them. I believe that while horses are not a common thing to see every day, most people know what they look like and therefore can get critical and spot flaws in their own work. Just relax and view the drawing as a series of light and dark patches, lines, shapes, anything but a horse if you find yourself running into that mental block.As for drawing humans, they are one of the trickiest subjects on the face of this planet. You can draw any clump of lines and call it a bush, tree, or what have you; because there is probably one that looks lie that on the planet. However, humans we see every day. Any mistake is instantly recognizable. They are not just inanimate objects they have a soul. And when we try and draw a character or a person, their soul shines threw and we get caught up in trying to depict their soul or their essence and criticizing ourselves when the human turns out not human looking in our eyes. What I do to draw them is the same as I do to draw horses (in which I see soul also) I reduce them to shapes, lines and shading. Hands and feet especially!!! Also for me drawing the opposite gender is hard. I am a girl, so for female anatomy I look in a mirror. Male anatomy I cant... there are many great tutorials on DeviantArt (just look up male anatomy practice, or female) and you will find lots of clean line art that block out the basic shapes. Using reference photos or even experimenting with different styles till you find what works better for you is also very effective.
Then just combine the two! And Voila! A person riding.
But the final advice is practice, practice, and practice. And donβt give up or rule out using reference photos (if you are looking for amazing riding photos with epic scenery and people riding horses at a fast pace, Google endurance riding and/or tevis cup)
