Reveille - Chpt 1 - The Last of The Old Blood
River Angels
Chapter 1
The churchyard was a quagmire of sinking graves and ankle-twisting puddles. More than once, one of the mourners nearly slipped on their backside—robbing the occasion of any dignity as the small group hurried across the burial ground at a disrespectful pace.
It seemed cliché that it should rain at a funeral, but then again, it had been raining for days.
The weather never spared sympathy for the affairs of men, and many in the city were quite thankful for the wet summer cooling the stifling heat—even if it could mean a poor harvest and starvation that winter.
Wet summers always brought disease and death in their wake, perfuming the air with the scent of mouldering damp instead of the customary sweat.
The small procession cursed the rain in silence as they finally arrived at their destination amidst the crooked
