Well, shading is nothing more than pressing harder, gradually and slowy, with your pencil. You can try different shades of graphite pencils- ranging from really light H's to dark B's. Or, you can use a charcoal/pencil combination - the charcoal smudges, but is extremely dark ( smudging may help shading and blending effects). Try shading several layers and blending them together to create a smooth light effect, or include deep contrast to make your shading stand out. Overall, most of it is muscle memory and experience.
