Most of the time I cheated via PhotoShop but there are plenty of examples where I had to create something completely new, my advice if you want to try your hand at creating your own ships is to start off with something small and new or that's already created and base it off of it.
My last B5 Design was small and created from scratch. My first B5 design was based off of one of MarcusStarkiller's B5 designs. Try it out, find your niche and go from there but try to enjoy yourself while doing it.
