Love the sketch work and colored work you do on Transformers, especially Optimus. He's always been my fave. Still trying to get the whole 'drawing mechanisms' thing down...it's frickin' hard!!! So, big congrats to anyone who can do it as well as they do.

Thanks! Yeah, it can be a little tricky, but as with anything it gets easier with repetition. Depending on the mecha style you're going for, there's different approaches which can make it super easy for you. Just find out what method works for you and you'll be on your way.

I'm going to have to experiment a bit then, but . . . out of curiosity, does it work to draw a human's figure first and then adjust it to add the 'armor' of a Transformer? What has worked for you, if you don't mind my asking?

I never do a human figure first, that would definitely work against me. I sketch out the shapes first, and for transformers that's usually boxy shapes, and then I add details on the second pass. The trick is to draw a rough, boxy version, then lower the opacity and go over it with a new layer and add the cleaner details. When that looks good, go over it a 3rd time with inks. When I get some free time in-between working on CASTERS, I'll post up a how-to video on my YouTube channel and link it here.

I think so, thanks. I keep forgetting about the opacity and 'layers' thing. I'm still thinking and working too much like a tradition artist.... I keep resketching over the same layer not realizing I can even reduce opacity and start again. Either way, I will for that video. It would help a lot. Not many of them out there. Thanks!
