# About me
(Above chibi done by the awesome MagischeMiria - definitely check her page!!)Hi guys!
I thought I'd join dA as I really wanted to explore all of the different art types out there, and upload a few of my own.
I draw occasionally, but not as well as I'd like. Maybe one day I'll get there :p
My main 'thing' is photography. One day I'd love to be a professional wildlife photographer, and maybe even combine it with my degree (I'm studying science), but I'll just see how it goes.
Please let me know if you like my photos! I appreciate every scrap of encouragement (and even criticism, haha).
You'll be able to see a difference from when I first started, to what I'm accomplishing now. Granted, I have better equipment but still! TECHNICAL EVOLUTION :D
Now, show me what you guys are capable of! :D

Your pictures are damn good, but they would be even better with no or at least a different watermark, if I may say so.

Thanks man.Β
As for the watermark, I know it detracts from my images, but I've yet to come up with a replacement. Rest assured, however, when I create a better watermark I'll update all of them!Β
Happy New Year

For me, the question always is, why use such an intruding watermark at all? The dA watermarks in particular are very ugly and always in the middle of the picture.

Do you mean why am I using the dA watermark, or why they have designed it like that in the first place?Β
Either way, I agree. The watermark isn't flattering, but at least it does help against possible theft.Β

Both!
Personally, I'm not worried about theft. Of course, I'm pissed when somebody claims my photos as theirs, but let's face it, they're not gonna make a million dollars from it, and neither am I. In this day and age, with billions of photos populating the www, it takes some extra effort to make a living off photography. And those professional photographers who have been in the business for a while know how to protect βand sellβ their work. They don't depend on using the dA watermark.
Having said that, I just wish, dA would come up with a less intruding watermark, or better still, with one that you could place discreetly into a corner of your image. That would be much better than that ugly thing that sits smack-dab in the middle of the picture.

My photos aren't good enough to be worth thieving yet But I guess I just like to know that I have my 'stamp' on the images.Β
Mm, trying to make money from photography is a bit of a dead-end I think, nowadays. Unless you can create a sort of niche for yourself. I'd really like to become a successful wildlife photographer (and by successful I mean have my work recognised, at least), but then so do thousands of other photographers.Β
You seem to know a lot about this topic. I was wondering, do you have any tips on protecting and selling photos? Or, at the very least, how I can apply a non-intrusive watermark. I would really appreciate it.Β
That would be far better, of course. But I have to say, their current watermark is better than the previous one!Β

You know, I consider this strictly a passion that I take seriously in my spare time but I don't depend on it for a living. I have a satisfying career with a decent salary.
Having said that, I agree with you, it would be nice to have your "stamp" on your work. I just prefer the non-intrusive watermarks that can be put in a corner or something. In contrast to the dA watermarks they can obviously be cropped out or cloned away with Photoshop.
Other than that I would recommend to look into www.digimarc.com/ . They offer Photoshop plugins that create rather foolproof watermarks but it will cost you an annual subscription fee.
The only thing I do is I have my photos copyrighted by my camera.
What I noticed over the years I've been on dA is that most professional photographers use watermarks very rarely and they don't use the dA watermark at all. I believe they have other outlets and contacts to exhibit their work and make money from it. Just as a qualifier, go ahead and google "most expensive photo ever sold" and you will stumble across a photo called "Rhein II" by Andreas Gursky (apparently sold recently for $ 4.3 million). Unfortunately I can't copy and paste that picture here. While this picture is a nice enough abstract I would venture to say that 90 % of my photos are more interesting than that and if I would submit that picture under my name to any high end group here on dA, it would be flat out rejected by most if not all. So what's the secret? Being exceptionally good, having a history or a track record, publishing regularly (whether in book form or for the National Geographic or your local newspaper, for instance), dedicating 100% of your time to this endeavor and being in the right place at the right time. Not sure whether that helps...
