Many, many layers, veins and so on underneath, and then picking them out with highlights and so on, I spent toooooo long on something so simple! hehe, thanks man.

well honestly it looks amazing, I think the many layers helped a lot. my first thought was some sort of cgi or photograph. but obviously its not an existing creature.
what kind of brushes did you use?

I was experimenting a lot back when I painted this, I recall watching a Gnomon Workshop DVD by Neville Page, on how to paint flesh. A lot of that concentrated at looking inside mouths (dogs etc) I created a few custom brushes for producing a web of capillaries, but really for 'shiny nastiness', it's all about the highlight placement, and that tends to be just a hard round or chalk brush nothing special.
I don't have the brushes anymore I'm afraid, and whats worse, this jpeg is pretty much all I have left of the original painting (which was I think A4 at 300ppi) due to a total hard drive crash quite a few years ago (I like to think I back up more regularly these days )

damn, what do you mean by A4? excuse my ignorance, I did traditional art exclusively until about a year ago, then slowly started getting into digital as I acquired the software and hard ware to do it.
Any chance I can ask you to have a look at the digital work Ive put up in my gallery(namely that in the concept art folder) and give me any advice or critique?

I put a critique on a few of your images, hope they don't sound harsh, they are only meant to help you improve in the direction you want to go in, Keep up the good work!

sure, A4 is just a paper size in Europe, it's about 12 x 8 inches so it was about 3600 X 2400 pixels or thereabouts.
