Hey again. You were asking for some tips. Here's a book that's been very interesting and helpful to me as a reference: Gary Faigin's The Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expression. I'm just a newbie, but in my limited experience, I'd say observation and time are key--more so than any techniques. Faces are visually made not of lines but rather of the play of light and shadow across the underlying bone and muscle structure. Carefully and slowly study and then try to recreate the nuances of those light and dark areas and you're good to go.
For shading with graphite, I find that building up in layers and repeatedly blending is important for a smooth look. Brighten or create highlights with a kneaded eraser and re-blend as necessary.
