# About me

My first Nikon was handed down. Shortly after receiving the hand-me-down Nikon (it was an FE with a single Nikkor 50mm at about f/3.2 for the camera geeks), I began taking photos of my friends and things all around me in college. Perhaps arising from my education in engineering, religion, philosophy, and law, I became interested first in composition, and shapes and colors, and later in juxtapositions and relationships of seemingly incongruous objects and situations.

I sold my first print in about 1989 and it is still a favorite image of mine. (See "Onion, Radish, Egg" at www.elimagenero.com.) I shot for a stock agency for a few years which did not make me happy at all. Then I started taking photo classes.

My work is not limited to any particular subject matter, although some viewers tend to focus on one or another theme and then tell me that theme on which they focus is the best and most interesting. I find it more interesting to show the sometimes hidden essence of relatively common subjects using focus, light or perspective. In many cases, the pure shape is important, and it doesn't matter to me if that shape is made by a person, a road, rocks, shadows, or something else. (See, e.g., "Whidby Surf Composition" at www.elimagenero.com.)

Many artists seem to believe that art in our age should be ugly or at least challenging and confrontational. While there is a place for that, and certainly I have created some pieces like this (see, e.g., my Urban Colors, and Entropic Convergence galleries at www.elimagenero.com), I focus on beauty emerging from the change that is sometimes seen as pure decay, and hope.

Prints of my work have been shown throughout California, and some currently hang on walls in several states and countries in América. Digital versions of some images are available for viewing at www.elimagenero.com.
