I first 'd your photograph of a supply drop on the south pole a long time ago, and just recently re-visited to see what you've got. I saw what camera you were using and what you've been doing, and ...wow? That camera itself costs somewhere around $700 used! Basically, I'm just wondering what you're doing to afford something like this. Do you have some sort of sponsorship, or did you just save up?
Keep up the excellent photography. You've got a knack for it (obviously).
Cheers

Wow, thanks for the kind comments! I'm nowhere near professional level, I take photos because I love to, not because I have any delusions of making money at at it. I have gotten better over the years, but it's my artistic outlet and nothing much more.
Believe it or not, I bought this camera with some inheritance money several years back, paid around $1500 for the whole package, and I'm not rich so yes, that was a lot. >.>
How do I afford to do this? Basic answer is that I've set my goal in life to see was much and experience as much as I possibly can. The career choices I make are based around that. I don't make a lot of money, but the jobs I take are aimed at getting me into a position (such as Antarctica) that will leave me near opportunities to explore what I want (Australia and New Zealand). I have just taken a job in Afghanistan that will hopefully provide me with the funds and flexibility to explore and do the same.
Thanks for the thoughtful response.

You're just a bit older than I am, but I don't think I could ever actually see myself exploring as much as you do. I guess a lot has to do with the fact that you've got the courage to go and try new things. And I'm supposed to stay here and finish with my Bachelors.
All I've gotta say is that I'm jealous. You're basically living life as close to "free" as you can. Even though it can be hard some times, at least I'm sure that you're going to have a lot of experiences that you'll never forget.
Good luck in living the life that everyone wishes they had

Bah... I'm not going to say it's been easy, but it's not impossible. I think I would have found easier, less risk involved ways to accomplish it if I had a degree to work with. As it is, I have to do things the hard way, it seems.
My ultimate goal is for me and teh wife to live overseas, and not just "holiday travel" after projects. A couple years in the UK, a couple years in Oz... etc. etc. That's the lifestyle I'd prefer, but it's certainly more dificult without college.
And if I'm living a life that everyone wishes they had, it's only because everyone else hasn't gone out and actually tried to grab it. If I am successful in someone's eyes, it's always been my goal to help them figure out how to get there themselves... not that I'm terribly good at showing the way...

Hey man, I figured since you've prolly got a few people here on DA watching you, you could help me get some word out about my friend wes . He's an awesome photographer but has next to no one watching him, which is a shame if you ask me. I feel he deserves more exposure and credit than he gets. So I was wondering if you might help me pimp him out in a journal or somesuch?
