Greigio In reply to Jamocha101 [2018-07-31 18:29:54 +0000 UTC]

I think that's the main reason I choose a tiny Jazz as our main protagonist. For all his flaws, he is still the little guy fighting the little guy's battle, undeterred by how huge and imposing his opponents are. He's had shouting matches with a dinosaur near twice his height, throws down with jets near three times his height, and commands his larger teammates very well. At the end of the day, it's true what they say; it's not the size that matters, it's how jazzy you are with it

That, and it's just hilarious putting the boss next to taller subordinates XD

Man, I kind of wish that recent TF incarnations had dramatic size scales like that.Β  I feel like we haven't had diverse heights among the main characters in a TF cartoon since G1, or maybe TFA to a lesser extent.Β  In RID and now in Cyberverse, everybody's roughly the same height.Β  I liked having a whole faction of mini-bots falling in next to big guys like Optimus and Ironhide.Β  I guess RID had mini-cons, but there was like nothing in between lol and they're relegated to subordinate status.Β  You can have teeny front-liners like G1 Bumblebee and Cliffjumper.Β  Why have the designers been shying away from that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Greigio In reply to Jamocha101 [2018-08-03 20:46:55 +0000 UTC]

I would wager it's simply for ease of environment and character interaction. When your characters are all around the same size, it's easier to put them all into the same space and avoid one being crazy huge next to the rest, or having to deal with hilariously unfair match-ups (remember how easily Evac walloped Barricade once he got a grip on him). I recollect in Beast Wars, the Axalon ends up destroyed right as Optimus gets an upgrade that makes him too huge to fit inside it, so he and the rest move into a larger base. This is the pragmatic reasoning, methinks; it's just easier to accommodate crews of similar sizes than dramatic differences; set-pieces don't have to be rearranged and no-one ends up unable to get into somewhere.

Sure, it's boring when everyone's within five feet of one another, but heck, you don't have to constantly lampshade how, say, Cliffjumper is lucky to make it through another day without Grimlock stepping on him or something

I get around this, personally, by having their home environments cater to the largest character (Evac/Starscream); the ships are designed to accommodate robots who reach fifty feet. The technology itself also changes and adapts to the robot's size. Around the consoles, for instance, the various seats can rise up and widen depending on who sits in them, allowing little bots to be on level with the big ones. The ships themselves cater to larger robots, thus making it roomier for smaller ones. This way, a large set is maintained and also allows for more diverse interactions and displays of how the robots adjust to size differences.Β

I do agree with you that dramatic scaling is much more interesting. It's much more of a intense fight when tiny Jazz goes up against massive foes like Seekers or Starscream, in example, and makes for more interesting uses of how the characters adjust to one another; for example, how Barricade fights against the four-feet taller Hound is vastly different to how he fought against the much larger Grimlock.

And then you get plain funny scenarios like 42-foot Evac legitimately cowering when 13-foot Jazz raises his voice XD

tl;dr: everybody's just lazy!

Diverse scale is better and would be worth the extra work imo.Β  Transformers should come in all shapes and sizes, especially depending on their vehicular forms.Β  It made no damn sense in TFP how a helicopter was the same size as a motorcycle.Β  In G1 the sizes didn't always make sense (as very little in that show did), but at least a semi-truck was larger than a cop car, which was larger than a beetle and so on.

SO LAZY

It absolutely is. You gotta take advantage of the fact these things are malleable and versatile machines, shapeshifting and all. They can be titchy as kids or as big as cities, so any range in-between is ought to be taken advantage of.Β
