Hello, Kevin.

I have used some of your Creative Commons pixelart to put together a "print and play" cardgame about JRPG battles, called Super Voxel Raiders. Of course, you have been credited accordingly and my game is accordingly licensed under another Creative Commons.

You can download it free at:
sinpagames.com/en/supervoxelra…

In the journal entry where you announce the licensing of your pixelart under Creative Commons, you state: "I don't know if anybody will get anyΒ realΒ use out of any of this." Well, I just wanted to tell you that it has been of real use to me.Β Thanks a lot for making your art and making it available.

Hey, that's awesome! Most people come looking to use this stuff for video games, which is a bit tougher because there are no animations or anything, but I think using them for graphics in a card game makes a lot of sense. Thanks for letting me know!

Hello! I lately did a pixel art "tutorial" and I found your artwork(s) really helpful as a reference, so I've used it there. You are mentioned in the picture as well as in the deviation description: Pixel art tutorial - shading / textures + examples
If you don't want to be here please tell me which pictures I need to remove
Have a good day!

A really good furry pixel artist!

You are also the type of person I am looking for with
help on pixel art but over 1,000 watchers on anyone's page = NOPE
But It's worth a shot to ask...

YOU DESERVE OVER 100,000 WATCHERS AND I AM WATCHING YOU RIGHT NOW!!!

Thanks. I'm not really doing much pixel art anymore, due to how time consuming it is, and spending most of my days working now. Willing to talk about pixel art still, though. Certainly don't mind seein' more anthros in pixel art

Kaiseto In reply to GraffOnPoint [2013-06-10 00:58:57 +0000 UTC]

So far as I know, sorry. Haven't done anything significant in over a year. The art I'm doing is mostly doodles in SAI, non-pixel-art, and hasn't really been getting saved or going up here. Pixel art is very time consuming, and I got the majority of it done when I was stuck in a class somewhere, unable to do much of anything else

Well I believe you deserve WAY more watchers! (even though you have over 1,000.)
Because it is REALLY hard to find a good anthro pixel artist...

also... Do you know anyone with free time that is also good at pixel art
that might be interested in my project?

Unfortunately the only people I can think of that are any good and work on projects with others tend to be professional freelancers, and they aren't really cheap. I also don't know them personally. Still, you should ask around on Pixeljoint or Pixelation . Sometimes you'll find amateurs and mid-level artists looking to get involved with a project for no pay.

Just looked at the art previously. Checked out the demo just now. Was a bit surprised by the crouch/crawl and sliding animations. Very nice elements for an action platformer, and the animations are solid.

The running animation looks good. Walk animation comes off a bit like hopping. I'm not spectacular at walk cycles, but this is one I did somewhat recently of a 4-frame left walking loop for a bipedal, digitigrade character. I think the main thing is to follow the movement of the foot with each frame, and make sure it keeps it's shape. Likewise for jumping, his legs appear to go plantigrade briefly, and you probably want to accentuate the sort of Z shape of the leg even when jumping.

Are you set with your controls? I generally find the most natural configuration for keyboard-based play of a platformer, when using a keyboard, uses the arrow keys for movement, and some keys near the left or bottom left for controls (Z for jump, X for attack, or shifted up to ASD if ZXC is too low). This is what most emulators seem to default to, as well as indie games like Cave Story and Spelunky. I think it leaves large enough spread between the hands to feel fairly natural.

Overall it's a neat prototype, and shows a lot of promise. Keep up the work.

MysteryCJGamer In reply to Kaiseto [2013-06-09 01:20:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Mystery's walking sprite was supposed to be hopping because that is
how he moves around at that speed. Pit from Kid Icarus: uprising also moves around
like that when walking.
(But I've been planning this animation for Mystery long before that game came out.)
The other two characters move like that because I couldn't get a walking animation for them to work...
I'm still working on attacking animations for the other characters aswell.
With Caleb, feathers just fly out and with Kitsu, claws just materialize
and then they disappear.
So the sprites and animations are still WIP.

The controls are used in a lot of modern PC games.
Cavestory is a couple years old so that is why it uses older controls.
I never played Spelunky. ZXC and arrow keys don't work because the keyboard
would lock when holding a combination of keys. That was how it was going to
control but I was having many problems because certain keys wouldn't respond,
and sometimes it thinks I am still holding a key down.
It's how keyboards are wired so it doesn't work at times.
You'll have to use joytokey so you can have custom controls.

Thanks!
I am working on the final game right now and I plan on polishing the game
after I finish it.
So most glitches won't be fixed till I am done because it's stressful that I
don't make any progress in the game because I spent a day or two fixing a single glitch.
but I still fix some here and there while I am working.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kaiseto In reply to MysteryCJGamer [2013-06-09 02:43:27 +0000 UTC]

Are you sure about the keyboard wiring? Different keyboards support different numbers of keys being pressed simultaneously, and particularly cheap ones may cap at three or so. It shouldn't matter which keys are being pressed. A mechanical keyboard with a ps/2 connector, for example, has an essentially unlimited number of keys that can be registered at the same time.

In any case, these are just my suggestions. I've never found the ASDW keys to be particularly good for controlling characters in a platformer type setting, but the more pressing issue is really the closeness of the hands. The best solution, of course, would be for you to provide a way to let the player set up a key configuration within game, though I don't know what the limits of stencyl are in this regard.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MysteryCJGamer In reply to Kaiseto [2013-06-09 04:48:06 +0000 UTC]

I don't have that type of keyboard.
I wouldn't be able to test it.

The WASD and Arrow keys are different per person
some people prefer WASD and some prefer arrows.

I also had an idea of reversing the controls.
so you use IJKL instead of WASD. the reason I considered
this instead of arrows is because of the keys for changing
characters are Q and E and they are at both sides of the W key.
so I would use U and O for the reversed controls.
But these controls are something to get used to.

Kaiseto In reply to lucas-irineu [2013-02-09 16:17:42 +0000 UTC]

I graduated and got a job I used to do most of my artwork during class, while half-paying-attention to the actual subject. Pixel art is such a time consuming thing to do, and I just don't have the motivation to spend all of my remaining free time doing it. The payoff isn't worth it.

So it's basically a mix of having a full time job that's stressful in its own right, and lack of motivation. Sorry I can't say anything more uplifting than that.

Don't worry, man, I understand! This has always been a hobby for you, and sometimes we don't have time for hobbies.

Do you do any non pixel art these days? It's still be nice to see whatever doodles you come up with on your spare time.

Is Solar Diamond(or whatever its name is now) dead?
Cuz it's some of my favorite music by FlashyGoodness and GOD I'd like to hear it in a game you had something to do with.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kaiseto In reply to Cemmerian [2012-09-30 05:27:03 +0000 UTC]

Hah. It never really even remotely started to get off the ground. Fun fact, I did make a crappy shmup with no gameplay and different music as a final project in a programming class. I spent most of my time working out enemy movements and the class ended before I ever made up levels or anything.

Screenshot

In hindsight, I find it funny that I made it with Swing, which is a UI layout framework and really not suited for games... worked surprisingly well despite that. The music used for the class was also different (something I made on my own ), which probably wasn't as good as Flashy's remixes/remasters/works of the themes I did as the "Solar Diamond" stuff.

I'm not sure if you've heard this, but you CAN buy a copy of the "Castle in the Sky" rerecorded soundtrack on CDJapan. It's not only a great way to own the score for yourself, but to actually appreciate it independently. It sold the whole dub for me, but on album it is phenomenal. Check it out!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kaiseto In reply to SionEDGE [2011-10-13 07:33:54 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, no, under most circumstances I can't do commissions. I'm a very slow artist and barely have to time do what I do end up doing. Engaging in someone else's project just isn't going to happen.

I am currently working on a commission for someone at the moment, and that's pretty much the only pixel art I have time to work on. It's a single piece, one time deal, unlike a game project, which is really the only reason I took it. Even then, it's taken me way longer than it should have. Started it months ago.
